Re: trip computer
Not all trim levels had a trip computer fitted as standard; GLX is quite low down on the trim level scale, which (for saloon/estate models) goes a bit like this:jonesblakey wrote:i have just got a 406 family estate 2.0l glx and as i was thumbing through the owners manual i noticed there is a trip computer on them....is it standard on peugeots as mine is a "s" reg 1998 model and when i tried to press the button on the end of the windscreen stalk it does nothing! also the climate control display is quite dull....i can just make out what it says if i get closer to it but thats not ideal for when im driving.....can you dim the brightness on them or do i need another display?

I had an LX saloon and it had basically nothing - no trip computer, no cruise control, no CD player, no electric seats, no seat heaters, no front fog lamps, no alloy wheels. It did have digital climate control (which is nice) and electrically-adjusted wing mirrors, and front electric windows (the rears were manual winders).
It is apparently possible to retro-fit the trip computer function to pre-facelift 406s (the ones like yours, with a slatted front grille - we call them D8s) but involves some kind of wiring. You also need to replace the stalk as the "button" you've been pressing isn't actually a button but a blank. The correct stalk has an actual button marked with two arrows.
Here's the how-to for this:

As for your display seeming dark - this is because the LCD screen is backlit using traditional filament bulbs, which do burn out over time. Fortunately these are cheap to buy and easy to replace. I can't find the how-to for this though - hopefully someone else will be along to help shortly.

Re: trip computer
cheers for advice.....nice to get some help as the manuals are for every model and you end up not knowing which is which.....your right about the stalk...there is no arrows so it must be a blank.....if anyone else can help with the climate control bulbs would be helpful.....thanks for info highlander....there can be only one? (sorry
)

Re: trip computer
if you press the stalk the info on the display for the radio stations & outside temperature display will start to show trip info as for dimming the display on the clocks speedo & rev counter theres a pushy button for the dimming of clocks dash & other things.
hope this helps

Hi mate, is the climate control dim or non existant? you may need to replace the backlight bulbs, pretty simple job and costs pennies.
Pop the stereo out, the MFD and the imobiliser blinky light thing to access the torx screws, you'll see half a dozen or so twist lock bulb holders in the back of the control.
As for the trip computer on the multi function display, is it showing --- followed by a petrol pump on the right hand side of the display?
If not there is a rotary switch on the side that changes the functionality, you need to gently lever it out with a small screwdriver to get at it, again simple enough to do. Might as well have a look when you check the climate control bulbs.
It may still need some additional wiring but I'm fairly sure the petrol GLX should have a trip computer but I could be wrong.
Take your time levering things out and you'll be fine, shouldn't take more than 10 minutes start to finish. I bought a pack of 10 bulbs from my local factors for £4.50 a few weeks ago, they were £1 each or 10 for £4.50 so always ask for bulk discounts.
