But it's not like public transport is even slightly capable of replacing most of the car journeys I do.

I mean, sure, I could go to work by bus in the morning (I just go out of my house and walk 5 minutes to the bus stop, take a bus from where I live to the city centre, then take another bus from the town centre to the industrial estate where my office is, then walk for 15 minutes from the bus stop to my office), but if I have to go to Montrose, Arbroath, or Alloa, then it's a complete bust. Because I'd have to walk for 15 minutes to the bus stop, carrying any equipment I'd need to take with me, then get on the bus (if there's one running at that time of day), go to the city centre again, get on an inter-city coach to where I'm trying to get to (and in the case of Alloa, that would involve changing coaches in Perth or Stirling).

I could go to my parents house in Thurso by train at Christmas time, but with all the things we can fit in the boot of the car to take with us, we'd never be able to do the same thing by train. AND we'd have to take the bus from our house to the city centre and walk from there 15 minutes to the train station anyway.

Public transport is utterly useless for a very large number of people in Scotland. In Aberdeen it's worse than in places like Glasgow (which has multiple bus companies competing for your business, plus excellent overground and underground railways) and Edinburgh (which again has multiple bus companies operating similar routes in competition with one another) because in Aberdeen, you've just got First and you've got Stagecoach. First operate the city bus routes, and Stagecoach operate the inter-city coaches. They're not competing with each other, or with anyone else for that matter, so bus fares are high, and the quality and frequency of the services is generally low.

Fair enough, 4 years ago, when I first started driving, it was a much cheaper way of getting around the city, but with the rise in fuel duty and petrol prices, with the rise in road tax and car insurance, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to fill the car up. On Friday I bought just over 3/4 of a tank of fuel at £1.38 a litre and it cost me £75. And they're telling me the fuel prices are going to increase even more this year, and on top of which the government are going to put the fuel duty up at this year's budget.

Car insurance is even more of a legalized rip-off, but I won't go into that here; I've already ranted at length about that on these forums and others. The government needs to intervene here because there's not enough regulation of the car insurance industry - it's a shining example of what the media have referred to as "Rip-Off Britain".

Incidentally, FairFuelUK (an increasingly popular campaign group calling on the government to keep fuel costs low) is organizing a demonstration on the 7th of March at Westminster, outside the Houses of Parliament, and plans to exercise the right of the voter to enter Parliament to lobby their MP (the "mass lobby" rule). If anyone can go there, please do, and sign up to the FairFuelUK campaign, and speak to your MP. We need cheaper fuel, not fuel duty/VAT increases - it's killing the country! http://www.fairfueluk.com/nationalfairfuelday.html
