DRONING NOISE
Hi
My car's started making a droning noise yesterday. Hard to tell exactly where its coming from. N/S/F had a new bearing last year, noticed the cv boot has a slight tear 2mm in length still has cv grease in it. O/S/F front has a slight bit of play in it from 9 o'clock to 3 0'clock thinking the wheel bearing here? checked underneath to make sure theres no gearbox oil leaking from the driveshafts and its dry underneath. It sounds like a Landrover the way it drones. Other than that i can't see much else wrong with it. Mechanic is having a look at iton weds. Have to suffer with the noise till then.......

Re: DRONING NOISE
The last bearing that went on the n/s/f made more of a humming noise than a drone. I'm off work next week so i'll be able to start taking it all apart and get the local garage to press a new bearing in for a drink. lol

Re: DRONING NOISE
Could it be a duff tyre? I've had noises from cars in the past that turned out to be out of shape tyres.

Re: DRONING NOISE
Cv's are more likely to make a clicking noise when you lock the steering that sounds like a bearing... but i'm no mechanic.
Re: DRONING NOISE
Yep iagree, couid be atyre,
Mine only gets noisey (bearing/noise) above 30mph.

Re: DRONING NOISE
Mechanic checked the 406 today and its the n/s/f bearing. The thing is i only replaced it less than a year ago. Not impressed with that must have been one that slipped through quality control! I bought the bearing from GSF their own brand vetech. So this time i'll spend a bit more money and get something like skf or lemforder.
At least i've got 10 days off work starting on saturday so i can get it done. One other thing springs to mind its not the first time i've had trouble with GSF own brand stuff they do a crankshaft pulley's as well and this one went belly up after 18,000 miles so my advice is to steer clear of vetech.
Thanks for all the advice . I'll let you know how i get on with taking it all apart. Take a few pics as well.......

Re: DRONING NOISE
I've got to take it all to bits at the weekend. I usually take the hub to the garage and they press the new bearing in for a drink usually £10. then i have to put everything back together but doing it this way costs £25 for new bearing plus ten quid so it works out a lot cheaper than taking it to the garage and letting them do it. I ordered a new bearing on ebay made by firstline i've had some droplinks and stabilser links made by themin the past and they are pretty good quality. Better than GSF's vetech brand. I'll see how it goes over the weekend not in much of a rush to do this job as i'm off work after tommorow.

Re: DRONING NOISE
Got the hub back from the garage yesterday cost ten quid more than they said bunch of chancers said it was more involved than they thought? The mechanic thought he was only pressing the bearing in it would be a bit difficult for me to take the bearing out seeing as i don't have a press. I had a bearing pressed in before and it only cost £15 and the hub didn't come back with a load of scrapes on it. Looks like the hub got a few good hits off the mechanic the part that the disc screws seems to have suffered the worst of it. Makes you wonder if anyone takes any pride in what they do?
I put the the whole lot back together today. Tommorow i'll take it for a test drive. Also replaced the cv boot as it was split so saved a bit of time while i was taking it apart anyway.

ithen asked them do you fit wheel bearings A: yes,

Re: DRONING NOISE
Mechanics? there a bunch of "parts fitters" nowadays, plug the car in and the diag says fit a new xxxx, fit that and it don't work then fit something else! There seems to be few "hands on" mechanics left that can actually diagnose a problem from what the engine sounds like etc and as for doing proper spanner wielding i have my doubts.

Re: DRONING NOISE
Thats exactly what the mrs said it should be the first price £10. All i had on me was ten quid told the garage they would have to wait until i get paid as it is a cash job they don't invoice it. I bet they must do a few jobs like that? Lol
£95 seems a lot of money just to press a new bush in i think i know what i would say.......

I'm fine lozz, thanks for asking

I haven't had much patience for going on forums just lately.
BTW, if you are struggling with getting a wheel bearing pressed out and in give me a shout and i'll sort something out for you if you can get it to me.
