406 SatNav Installation

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 SatNav Installation

Post by ads2k9 »

Hi All

Just a simple question really. Is it possible for me to install a SatNav system into my 406 which does not have one fitted?

I know its easy to go and buy a TomTom and just use that but for security and style reasons i would prefer a pug standard installation.

Thanks

It is possible, yes. You'll need:

- the Sat Nav CD-ROM drive and mounting bracket from a 2002/2003 car
- the Sat Nav aerial and cabling
- the Sat Nav-capable MFD screen to replace the one built-in to your dashboard
- the remote control handset for the Sat Nav screen (vital)
- the most recent NavTeq CD-ROM containing Sat Nav data for the UK

You might be able to buy all of this kit in one shot as a job-lot on eBay.

Bear in mind that:

- the Sat Nav CD-ROM drive is prone to moisture/condensation and as such has frequent problems reading the disc
- the Sat Nav-capable MFD screens are prone to display lines failing and temperature-related "bleeding"
- the Sat Nav-capable MFD screens (in working order) are becoming very rare indeed
- the remote control handset is used not only to set your Sat Nav destination, but to configure the MFD (your current screen has a pair of buttons built into it; these are gone from the Sat Nav display)
- the most recent NavTeq CD-ROM is from 2006, therefore it is already 6 years out-of-date - it also costs more than £80+VAT
- most of the compatible NavTeq CD-ROM discs on eBay are from 2002 / 2003 so these are 9 or 10 years out-of-date

If you still want to go ahead with this, we will certainly give you advice on it, but the general consensus is that it's not worthwhile doing.

I never use my car's built-in Sat Nav; instead, I have a sucker-mount stuck to the dash board, and a detachable arm that comes off it. I put the arm on the sucker-mount and then put my Android phone (HTC Sensation - ace phone!) on the arm, then just use Google Navigation. This app uses Google Maps' mapping data and the phone's built-in GPS receiver to plot where you are and where you need to go. Because it's up at windscreen height it's easier to read without taking my eyes off the road. The display is crisp and clear and shows me a TomTom-style view of the road ahead, so I can easily see which exit of a roundabout I should take while I'm still about a mile away from it. It also gives spoken directions. And I use BlueTooth to hook it up to my car's after-market stereo, so the spoken directions come through my car's speakers; very clearly spoken and easily-understandable.

what he said.

In my opinion what's the best from that all is the display, you can have it and you don't need the sat nav unit, although you will need programming it with pp2000.

Ill agree with highlander,
the screen only offers a better trip computer, and more info on the radio i.e. you have rds data and the frequency in one glance. But in the past year I've only seen about 2 type c displays come up on ebay selling for about £90+ and the dealer price is over £300. If your lucky a scrapyard might have an se 406 in at the moment and you can get the screen off it cheap without them knowing how rare they are.
As for the sat nav, the 2003 disk is very out of date and utterly useless in ireland, i don't see a newer one on ebay or even pirate copies don't seem to be available.

If you have all the kit then surely put it in if you need help just ask its fairly straightforward, but trying to collect the stuff is a nightmare.

The sat nav is in my car but the iPhones tom tom app gets used all the time
