Anyone know what could cause the speedometer to stop working? mine done it twice this morning on a 20 mile trip it just flatlines for a few miles then kicks back in.

Funnily enough I had clocks out (again) yesterday to fix speedo and change a few dash bulbs. Speedo was either not working at all or jumping about and even reading well over actual speed.

There is a very good how to on here by Gary if you have a D8.

Mine appear to have a slightly different problem to the dry joint Gary describes, I cleaned up the contacts on the big blue connector block (you'll see what I mean if you take your clocks out) and my speedo is working smoother and my dash bulbs are all working again
The blue block seems to control the right hand side, the yellow the left.

Having got time right now to find the link to Gary's how to as the boss will be back in a minute and I'm not supposed to use tinterweb for personal use on their time

Only the once a few weeks back it was my mrs driving it today i'll ask her when she gets in.

Not sure mines a D8 or D9 to be honest never looked into it.
It's a 2000 plate 2.0hdi lx estate i think that makes it D9 but honestly dont know.

The D8 to D9 transition occurred during 1999, so your 2000 model is most definitely a D9.

Your car will also have partially-multiplexed wiring and "thin" control stalks, as the change from part-MUX to full-MUX and COM2000 control stalk system only occurred during 2001.

You can easily tell a D8 saloon/estate from a D9 saloon/estate. The front grill is the easiest way to check - if it's a horizontally-slatted front grill on either side of the lion badge, it's a D8. If the grill is made up of a black honeycomb mesh, then it's a D9. On a saloon, the back end is also a good clue; the D8 saloon has a horizontal groove running across the back of the boot lid under the lion badge/boot opening button, whereas the D9 saloon's rear end is smooth. If you look inside, the dials on the dashboard of the D8 have a flattened bottom, but the D9 dials are perfectly round.

The Coupe also has a D8 and D9 version, and the D9 has a part-MUX and full-MUX version (the transitions occurred at the same times as on the saloon/estate models) but the exterior visual differences are VERY subtle - I think it's down to the colour of the side indicators; if they're orange lenses it's a D8, if it's clear lenses it's a D9.

So on that bombshell mine is a D9 part mux non comm2000 2.0hdi 110 estate with all the bumps and bruises.... that sounds like a great ebay add if i knew what half of it meant.

Think i'll swap it for a horse.

Yup!

Meaning you have the face-lifted car, and you don't have the more-complex wiring or the most-expensive control stalk system known to man.

Mine is a D9 full-MUX COM2000-equipped 2.2 petrol Coupe.

You might save a packet on fuel but I don't think you'll be doing any DIY repairs if it goes wrong

Plus at least with a car, you don't get people angrily demanding you clean your vehicle's exhaust emissions off the street as soon as they are expelled.
