Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 Hdi (90) glowplug problem

Post by meakinpaul »

Hi all iv'e just bought a 406 hdi (90)

i'm guessing its got the siemiens system onit has got primer bulb

right the problem i have is that even when cold and left over night the glow plug light doesnt come on at all.

it starts first time but shakes and smokes alittle for about 30 seconds and after this runs perfect and will start fine for the rest of the day

it did say the over day on dash coolant temp to high , stop it's only done this few times but the gauage only reads 90 so that seems ok

i'm a guessing right that it could be temp sensor but not sure

if any of you have had this problem would be helpful for you to let me know

paul :)

HDi's only use the Glowplugs when it's less than 3-4°c and even then it's only for a split second.

The HDi90 has a seperate water heater to warm the car up first thing in the morning.

The only time it uses the glowplugs is when it's very cold, and the light literally just flashes on and off.

The glow plugs do stay on after starting to help with emissions during the first few minutes. They are controlled by the coolant temp and are pre-heated on a scale to suit the temperature.

The warning message you had sounds a bit like this problem below.....

If there's nothing coming out of the relay it sounds like that's the problem to me?

i'm aware of the problem with no power coming out of the relay

have been told that being the 02 plate on it has the later type system where the glowplug system is controlled via ecu by tempture reading from temp sensor

i'm not sure if this is correct
