I have 1996 1.9 Turbo saloon, 215,00 miles. It was working great, a little longer to start in the cold weather but otherwise fine.
Now nothing. Engine throws over fine, power to the glow plugs, fuel filter clean, primed by hand pump but not the slightest kick.
Now, Haynes refers to a Stop solenoid on the Bosch fuel pum/injector and there is a not very clear picture in the book. I cannot find this isolator, the end of the fuel pump/ injector appears to be a different configuration than the Haynes picture. I tried to identify it by finding the supply wire but nothing seems to lead to an isolator.
Can anyone tell me where to find this thing? It seems the obvious thing to check next.
Regards,
Colin.

Re: Diesel Fuel Pump/ Isolator
dunno about the 1.9 one mate, someone will come along who does, but that item you describe would have the same effect on any diesel, as it replaces the old style fuel strangler used on non ecu diesels. its usually a one wire system feeding a 12v solenoid that cuts or allows the fuel to flow from or to the injection pump.
also consider the immobiliser if fitted.

Re: Diesel Fuel Pump/ Isolator
Unfortunately the 406 has the immobiliser mounted on the pump, the solenoid that has (probably) failed it located inside the immobiliser block, so you need to remove the cover (it's a destructive procedure) and replace the solenoid.

Re: Diesel Fuel Pump/ Isolator
Stevieboy TD, when you say destructive, how destructive?
If it means, taking it off the car and a bit of hack sawing, then I can do that. Or do you mean I should look for a whole pump replacement?

Colin.

Re: Diesel Fuel Pump/ Isolator
You need to get rid of the cover on the back of the pump, it's fitted on with two snap-off bolts.
Takes a bit of time with a hammer and chisel but eventually you'll get to the bolts, then wind them out with a set of grips.
Immobiliser circuit will be totally trashed after this, so just run the switched live from the immobiliser feed to the stop solenoid.

Thanks for the reply.
What you say sounds practical and doen't worry me...too much.
I think I might try and and pick up one from a scrappy first, if I can.
I don't have much spare time, so doing a simple swap would be easier.

Re: Diesel Fuel Pump/ Isolator
It'll be easier to do the current pump, less hassle with retiming it and such then.
If you do get a spare pump, but sure to get the semi ecu model.

Re: Diesel Fuel Pump/ Isolator
Hi,
I have problems with diesel fuel supply to engine. The fault shows itself by engine not starting. However, I am able to start the engine if I feed diesel start gas down the tube that goes parallell to the air filter and joins the tube from the air filter to the engine. Thereafter the engine runs like normal. This is not a permanent problem, as the engine might also start normally without the use of start gas.
So I wonder:
- what governs the opening and shutting off of the solenoid valve ? Could it be that even if the solenoid valve is shut during starting of the engine, it would actually open and not close if the engine is already running ??
- is there a low pressure pump installed in the diesel fuel tank that might not operate properly ?
I presume the problem with tha faulty isolator that you described is resolved by now. I was thinking of replacing the one on my car until I thought of using diesel start gas. The start gas seemed to solve my starting problem, and the car has operated ferfectly well for 2 months, until today when the engine did not start without start gas.
I hope you can help to enlighten me on this topic, and look forward to your answer.
Bers regards from Marius

Re: Diesel Fuel Pump/ Isolator
Did I tell you I fixed it ? well, not fixed but resolved. Squirted start gas into the air intake, and voila ...engine started ! I have since browsed about thise fora and found post indicating the same symptoms and fix. The fuel pressure seems to drop while engine/car is standing. So if I just use manual fuel pump to pressurize the fuel before starting, the engine starts on first try. Fixing this I presume involves fitting some new pipes and fuel filter and fuel filter cap seal.
