Both are good cars, with the 407 not being as good as the 406 in any area tho, exept impact protection.
Honestly it hugely depends what car you find, if you find either of those in spot-on condition, low price and good service history then go for it.

But a 406 would be better!

I love my 406 but even the youngest ones are 8 years old now. Fancy something newer, can afford to do so, so why not ehh?
I do think the 407 coupe is a much better looking car than the 406 coupe :supafrisk:

I would keep those sentiments to yourself, lest the coupe boys, 'pay him a visit'. :frown:

Instinctively, I would go for a Pug, as opposed to a Pug that's been burgered about to fit in a Frod.

Meh, depends hugely on the engine. The 2.2 liter HDI is a Joint venture Ford-PSA and is thus used in some Fords under the TDCi name, for example.

What I mean is that tou cannot say "this type of engine is crap". It depends on the model a lot. For example the HDis are very good engine but some of them are crap, for example the early 1.6HDi which required a new turbo every time you started it. 8)

Ford older TDCi engines need DMF's every 130k and are known to kill injectors which can cost upto £1000 to replace.

Kinda scares me off that.

Where as the coupe...
EGR? £200 for a new one on Ebay + £5 for a blanking plate.
DMF? Not heard of one fail.
FAP? £300 to be removed and remap to 185bhp.
Headlights bulbs? £100 a pop

Biggest expense is the triangle bit of glass on the front door. That smashes and it's £600 from the dealer.

Know what you mean about the TDCi engines & DMFs, but not sure if it is just the early ones or all of them. 130k is a bit of a conservative estimate too. My 2002 TDDi had a new clutch at 70k & a 53 plate TDCi I drove had a knackered clutch at 85k. Hell of a lot of Mondeo TDCi taxis round here though with not so many 407s, so they can't be that bad.

Personally I think the 407 coupe would be a wiser investment, but try to keep to pre 2008 as I was reading something the other day that suggests that this will be the point for compulsory particle filters. At least with a 2007 you could make your own mind up. Also, I think the relative rarity of the 407 coupe will make it something of an investment as I reckon they won't lose much more money over the next few years.

Although for a bit of objectivity, the guy 2 doors down has a 56 plate ST TDCi. Although he hates it (no particular reason, he just doesn't like it), he hasn't spent a penny in maintenance in the past 12 months. Don't think he's even serviced it, but funnily enough, there are no rattles when he starts it or when he comes down the road & it hasn't let him down yet.

idont know why there are so many horror stories about the mondeos,
there just like any car, you get a good one or abad one, (pot luck)

the only problems ive seen with them is,

Rear calipers seize up
Aux belt tensioners are prone for failing, not easy to change!
waterpump is a pain to change, as the water pump and pwr steering pump is combined,

ive seen mondeys go round the clock before the dmf as started to fail,
