My dad has a 407 coupe, can't speak highly enough of it. It's got the 205bhp 2.7 v6 HDi engine and goes like sh*t off a shovel. I do the like the ST Mondeo's aswell, really nice subtle bodykit makes them look the part.

Present - 95' 405 GLX TD
Previous - 01' 406 LX HDi

I don't know why people give off about X types being based on the Mondeo, when things like audis sell like hot cakes and they're just expensive Skodas.
Sure 406s are just rehashed Xantias without the floaty suspension.
Nearly everything is based on something else these days.
And sure the X type diesel, is that not a HDi engine?

I drove a saab 93 today, first drive in a saab. The same uncle who had the insignia changed to the saab because he wanted an automatic. Even with a slushie machine choosing the gears it was still rather quick it hit 70 in no time, and the paddles on the wheel were a nice touch, except there was a huge delay between pressing one and it happening.
And this is based on a vectra, but it didnt feel like one to drive or sit in.

I've been reading this topic with interest becuse i too was looking at a newer car.
Basically wanted a diesel because of the ever increasing pump prices ... so started window shopping on Autotrader
1st choice was Skoda Octavia. good write ups, owners speak very highly of them 50mpg,BUT can't get one with half decent milage (90-100k) for much less than 2 grand.
So thought jag x type. 45mpg looks ok BUT , DMF'S fail at about 80- 100k which is the sort of mileage that i would be buying in at with a budget of say 2.5k. plus the injector probs so that also ruled out the

vauxhall?...loads of them vectra's , astras absolutely loads for sale. did a bit of reading ,and things mentioned on here also ,about a certain diesel engine ... give them a miss . plus the seats aint comfy either..plus DMF
So back to Skoda. the Superb, nice car alot of motor for the money , but again injector issues (in the 2.0 pd iirc the 1.9 are ok) and alot of them have the tiptronic gear box, so after a bit of reading ,that appears to need replacing circa 100k miles.
Also throw in euro 4 compliance emissions on modern diesels, which i believe means they have particulate filters (please correct me if i'm wrong didn't find alot of info on the subject) i have decided to keep the pug till it dies. It's done me proud for 2 and half years , straight through the 2 MOT'S i've took it for , returns 34-36 to the gallon (dependent on right foot) never had any major probs and just cannot justify spending money on a newer car that may turn out to be a money pit anyways.

You can get Berlingo/Partner vans on an 05 plate with a non-turbo 1.9 diesel if you can put up with 0-60 in 2 weeks. I know someone who has owned a Fabia VRS 130bhp 1.9TDi since new. Now has >100k and has never given him any issues. Motorway miles, serviced on the button at the dealer.

What about a toyota avensis d4d, my dad had one and it never gave any bother, it was the smoothest running diesel I've ever heard, with the doors closed it was quieter than a petrol car. The old ones were a bit of a white good appliance but the new ones look alright, or a lexus is220d really does look good, and it handles even better.

Yes I too heard that Toyota's D4D engine were btilliant. Also the 2.2 liter Honda found in the Civic and the Accord is an astonishing engine, awarded best diesel engine for a while. Quiet, refined and cheap to run. A friend of mine has a Accord diesel and it's a very refined and good car

Toyota = Oil consumption, over-fueling (dpf regen) causing piston ring wear, Turbo Failures, Intermittent cutting out, water pumps failing and leading to over-heating and HG failure, Swirl Flappage, Clutches........

Honest John i directed a friend to that site he wanted to buy a honda jazz, but after reading the reviews is put off the car because it has a weak gearbox
My dad had a 2003 avensis d4d and kept it 5 years with no problems. My aunt bought another 2004 one a year later than my dad, she still has it 130k miles on the clock and the only problem was the DMF, she got it sorted with a solid conversion.
As for the honda my grandpas brother has one, it has had no mechanical issues he changed the oil ever 5k on his old merc and still does it with the honda and prefers it to his 320d. A neighbour also has a nice executive one it hasnt blew up either.
Is the D4D T180 toyotas 2.2 engine?

The Accord forum is full of horror stories of Honda diesels in the last gen Accord. Shame, as they are a nice car otherwise.
Always liked Avensiseses too, and thought the D4D might've been alright, but its another nightmare by the sounds of it.
I guess the name of the game is finding something with a full service history that's been looked after. Not easy when you're at the budget end of the market fighting over them with taxi drivers (minicabbers for the Londoners).
Big Merc diesels used to be the ticket, mates dad had one back in the day, the W123. Big comfortable thing, doors were like a bank vault, clattery old diesel automatic but never mind it being off the road.
They went downhill somewhere around the late 90s when the beancounters took over from the engineers.

I think the T180 is the 2.2, I can't be bothered to look at the forum because their blind faith just makes me angry. One thing is they don't seem to have been inflicting FAPs on them until quite late, I presume the rest of them are like the RAVs which have an easy to spot "D-cat" badge on them, like it's a good thing to have
