Bottom engine mount?

Post by scotty73 »

I'm half way through changing my oil and filters and notice something just behind the sump plug, it's like a round housing with a rubber in it the rubber looks perished to me plus theres quite a bit of play in it.

Would this be the bottom engine mount? if so is it just the 1 and am i better off changing it while i'm under the car today? (if i can get one today)

Here's the lower mount:

And what's up with them mostly:

Fit a new one and the car will be *transformed* honestly. Bit of a pig to fit as you're supposed to remove the driveshaft :frown:

Another easy test is to have the engine idling and blip the throttle slightly - if the engine moves by more the 25mm then the mount is shot. Mine used to lurch forward by about 50mm :o

Scotty, the bottom engine mount is located on a sort of arm that bolts onto the back of the engine and onto the sub frame.
Easy to spot as the drive shaft runs conveniently through the middle of the arm making it impossible to remove the mounting arm with the drive shaft in place.
The sensible and easiest option is to remove the drive shaft, unbolt the mount and have a garage press a new rubber in. It's also an opportunity to change the gearbox oil at the same time.
It can be done without removing the mounting but involves lots of cutting, hacksawing, hitting with hammers and copious amounts of swearing and don't forget to have a large packet of elastoplast handy!!!

Dear sajlfc,

Very very probably Scott, we have two of these, there both identical.

One from a 90hp HDI v reg and one form a 110hp HDI form 2002.

Seeing as your car sits between them i cant see how or why it wouldnt fit.

Hope this helps

Mark
Two questions.
1. is this my only option? i've read about helicoiling is this still an option?
2. if this is my only option dont i have to remove what looks like an air con pump to me? if it wernt for that it looks a relativly easy job?

I just measured the thread on the sump plug and it's 14mm so if i bought one of these wouldn't it be easier than removing the sump?

And a few quid cheaper? :?

If the old thread hole is 14mm diameter and the tap is 15mm (as listed in the ad) then this would seem a good solution to the problem.

When you tap the new thread be careful to get the tap straight and to take great care rethreading.....move the tap slowly forward and back as you progress into the hole....coat the tap with loads of grease and clean the tap and hole every few millimetres.

After you have finished tapping the new thread leave out the sump plug and pour some of the old oil back in to flush out the swarf that might be left over from the job.

When you screw your new plug in use a little instant gasket/silicone sealer on the end of the plug where the washer fits.

Good luck with the job!

I was half expecting you to laugh at the idea to be honest Jasper, i was thinking well if this aint been mentioned on here before what chance do i have?

I've ordered the 15mm and will take extreme care doing the job.... well i'll get my mate to tap it he's always drilling and taping the old bikes he restores.... Hopefully all will be sorted soon i dont fancy the new sump route.

Thanks!!

The method I wrote about is exactly how to fit a helicoil, except you will be fitting a new sump plug into the new thread you will be cutting.

The helicoil screws into the new thread so that you can use the original sump plug.

I've fitted loads of helicoils over the years, I used to offer a fitting service a few years ago when I had the helicoil kits and the older engines needed them on a regular basis (old minis etc), the modern Vauxhalls with the aluminium sump are starting to come through with damaged sump threads.

Thats given me more of an understanding of how helicoiling works.

Well my 15mm sump bolts and tap just arrived am twiddling my thumbs now til my mate comes home so he can tap it for me, hate waiting on others but he's tapped more holes than me.

Oh err misses just realised what i said there.
