Test drove a MK4 Mondeo today. Looks like the badger to go for.

The 407 is too wide, the ST TDCi is too unreliable.

MK4 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Titanium X

Ford build quality and electrics, PSA engine. Sounds like a good combo to me!

Sounds like more than £5k to me. Has the budget increased now?

I have ~£5000, can stretch to £5500 plus whatever I can get for my 406. I'd say thats a good £500.
So my utmost budget is £6000, although would rather spend closer to 5.

What about the same engine in a 407 (saloon/estate) or a C5?

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Considered 407 Coupe, test drove one and it felt like a spaceship to drive.
Uncles 3 year old C5 has had a list of trouble longer than his arm in 3 months.
I've considered all the options really. The Mk4 Mondeo has NO! common faults at all! (the most reliable car per miles driven according to the biggest warranty companies!)

Oh and insurance is just £1400

Width? Bollocks! Probably feels it because of the shape and driving position in a coupe. I said 407 saloon/estate.

Mondeo HDi 140 56MPG / Tax D / Insurance 19
407 HDi 140 49MPG / Tax F / Insurance 24

And this is the same engine?

Looks like I'm going to have to seriously consider a Mondeo

I'm not a great lover of how they look, the wheels always look far too small.
But they have a cracking interior and are great to drive!

I also reckon with a couple of spacers and a 30mm drop it will look much less like it's on stilts.

But the big thing for me with getting anew car is it has to be good on insurance, economical, good at doing long distances and reliable. The mondeo seems to be better than all the rest for this!

How does it compare, financially, to keeping the 406?
Not much difference on MPG.
Cheaper tax. Cheaper insurance.
Finance costs. Depreciation.

Well I got my current 406 for £350.
New car is going to cost £5000.

So I'm already at a bad start
Although this new car I will keep until it dies or 10 years old, so I really think I should avoid thinking about the depreciation. I also think though that it will be worth abit more than the 407 when it comes to sell it, I also think it will last better too.

I will be £600 better off on insurance in November and the insurance will give me £270 back if I get a mondeo right now.

No finance, I'm lending £3000 off my parents and will pay them back over the next year or two. Rather it that was as if I'm ill, have to have a few days off work etc the repayments are negotiable and no interest

My 406 is doing some pretty good MPG now, last 6/7 fillups I've had 50mpg+ which is better than my Uncle ever got out of this car. So I hope to be getting the same out of the Mondeo.

I'm going to want to keep up full service history, although will use a guy I know who works from a massive 4 car x 4 car garage on the side of his house (My sorta house! :cheesy: ) I will probably go to 6 month 6,000mile intervals. Probably looking £20 in parts and probably chuck him £50 or so to drop the oil, change all the filters and have a quick check over the car. Although I pay him cash he is a genuine garage, gives me a reciept and stamps the book.

I do think it's going to be half as bad as it sounds to be honest!
Only worry is timing belts are due 120k. So if I get one close to that mileage I'm going to have to knock £200 off to get it sorted.

My Dad's V50 is a cracking car, 4 years old, 110k and it goes back next monday. I am gutted to see it go!
I have been looking at a V50 with the 2.0 HDi engine but it's not the same when you've driven a V50 with twice the power and one hell of a soundtrack 8)
I think I could afford to run a D5, but insurance is insane

And with those numbers, I believe it's time to say 3-series

The mk4 mondeo is more like it, a great looking car with a great interior, though why has piano black interior trim become so popular, it seems to act as a magnet for greasy fingerprints.
