Re: Where to buy all this stuff?
Be glad to get a garage on my next house, bit of shelter from the endless rain this spring/summer has brought.
Re: Where to buy all this stuff?
They meant go and pay someone else in the garage to do it... Know what you mean though i've put jobs off since i got the 406 in December all due to weather... wish i had a garage.sirwiggum wrote:Be glad to get a garage on my next house, bit of shelter from the endless rain this spring/summer has brought.

LOL, well that's what happens here too, but since you have a much bigger used car market than we do and keep the cars for much longer (for you a 120k miles diesel is in the middle age, for us it is considered close to dying) probably you take care after them better than we usually do => lower prices for all the stuff that can be replaced DIY style.scotty73 wrote:I know what you mean i was fixing mine in our turning Friday and everyone who turned their car was windows down asking whats wrong... I said giving it a service and most of them said "theres a garage up the road"sirwiggum wrote:Lot of people in the Uk don't either.
I rarely see people in the street hoking at a motor, they buy these 316is on the never-never and rely on the dealer - even to check the oil and tyres!![]()
The look at you in disbelief if you have a car up on ramps changing the oil.

Re: Where to buy all this stuff?
Yeah don't tell me it's just stupid, even mechanics say so, a Peugeot mechanic told me that 2.2HDi engines usually die at 150k miles so I had to avoid buying my 406 with 110k miles! And the only time I had a Peugeot dealer do a service they told me to start thinking about a new car...scotty73 wrote:If 120.000 miles is old age to you whats mine then 215.000 cremated reincarnated?![]()

dead at 150k Thats madness most mechanics say the 406 can cope with over 200k no problem.
Although when i was in italy (about 10 years ago) there seemed to still be a fair few small fiats such as the mk1 panda and typo/uno (can't tell the difference)

120k on a diesel is barely run in.
Mind you, having seen the standard of driving in Rome, the rest of the car is probably covered in dents by the time it reaches that mileage

Total hogswill if you ask me, they're probably trying to scare you into buying another car from them so they can pocket the commission
What's the deal on these parts then, did you get anywhere?

Yes it's true. Many in the cities still use very old and small cars even because old cars usually pay next-to-nothing insurance and road-tax, since most are considered historical vehicles (in more than 20y.o., only a list of interesting and important is considered historical, over 30y.o. every car is considered historical). But for example where I live which is a small (38k inhabitants distributed in a big area) and isolated city, where traffic and parking is not a real problem, old cars are a rarity. People are just ignorant and even if a car is good they scrap it because it's old, like my mum did with her 106 (only needed new rear springs, glow plugs, an oil change and driver's door opening fixing and it was good for another 100k miles), but she decided to get the new Clio which is utter crap compared to it.FarmerPug wrote:dead at 150k Thats madness most mechanics say the 406 can cope with over 200k no problem.

It's true, but do not judge the entire country from Rome, which is the second worst (after Naples) city for urban driving in Italy. I live in a small city and urban driving is much much much more tolerable. Here, if a car gets bumped or scratched, we care. In the cities, they don't. Just an hour ago I saw a car reversing (I'm in a big city right now, Trieste) fast on a wall. Crash! The poor little old fiesta's rear headlight was completely destroyed. The driver did not even bother getting out of the car to check the condition of the bumpers and just drove away!sirwiggum wrote:120k on a diesel is barely run in.

Still looking. I'm building a small .pdf with all the parts.steve_earwig wrote:Total hogswill if you ask me, they're probably trying to scare you into buying another car from them so they can pocket the commission![]()

Also before ordering I'm asking a friend of mine from Slovenja what prices he can get there, they seem to be a little cheaper than here and I'd save on shipping, since we are only 1.5h away from each other.

I mind seeing in florence a man parallel parking in between parked motorcycles, his punto was a bit too big but that did not bother him he just ploughed on into the bikes and knocked 2 down, got out, locked the car and went on about his businessOdinEidolon wrote: It's true, but do not judge the entire country from Rome, which is the second worst (after Naples) city for urban driving in Italy. Here in Trieste it's not a problem since the wind knocks down the motorcycles by itself

(last year we got a record ~110mph wind, 80+mph winds are not unusual)

Re: Where to buy all this stuff?
My favourite was in Rome watching a mk1 (80s) Panda pull out of a parallel parking space that was barely big enough for it, then this big Freelander barges in and pushes the cars in front and behind to make the space bigger

If I find out someone doing that to my car...sirwiggum wrote:My favourite was in Rome watching a mk1 (80s) Panda pull out of a parallel parking space that was barely big enough for it, then this big Freelander barges in and pushes the cars in front and behind to make the space bigger
That's Rome by the way, in Trieste where there's lots of parking problems too they are not that bad! You just have to be careful about where you park.
