Seriously though, I've got no idea whether it's safe, whether it would fail "safely" etc, suppose I'd better lop off a limb and get it fixed. Did anyone ever locate a non-dealer source for the back plates?

Nah sorry mate, J Owens in Hirwaun was OK but I haven't been there for years so don't even know if he's there anymore...
