Quietest Engine Oil for a 2.1TD?

Post by Steveo »

Hi Gents

Have just sold my 2.0 HDI Executive and bought back the previous 2.1TD Executive for its rugged build quality - am I crazy for doing this? Possibly....!

Anyway, please can anyone tell me if running fully synthetic Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 0W-40 oil will make her a little quieter (as compared with cheapo local garage oil)?

And what should one do when changing from presumably a non-synthetic oil to a fully synthetic oil?

And finally, are any particular make/model of oil filters to be avoided or others to be recommended?

And finally finally(!) are there any other consumables involved with doing an oil change other than filter and oil e.g. drain plug washer?

Many thanks

Steve

no your not daft for going back to XUD . XUD far better than HDi  a lot less problems to deal with.
i would stick with 10w 40. i think thats what most use nowadays . its a semi but good .
i just use oil fiters from euro car parts the cheap ones. i think all oil filters will do the same job really.

you may need a sump washer yes but i just reuse the old one., you can get these from the dealers for pennys anyway so may be best to use a new one
while your at it changing the oil and filter. you may as well do the fuel and air filter as well. give it a full engine service.

Congrats on the switch, though I'm clearly biased!

I also use 10W40 semi synth. It has the usual XUD clatter on cold starts, but quietens down once the engine is warm. Uses absolutely no oil between changes though :)

PS. Any pics of the 2.1?

Thanks for your replies Gents.

Gary, I see you've recently had a new Valeo clutch... mine at 154k miles is due a new one too...

Is Valeo the daddy of all clutches and the one to be going for? If so why? And what total clutch components should I (or more honestly my garage!) be replacing whilst they're at it?

Jon did you get the new clutch you were thinking about a few weeks ago? If so, what did you get and how big a difference has it made?

And as you asked Jon, I attach a couple of photos of the old new old girl!

Cheers

Looks in superb condition, 2.1 execs are seemingly becoming very rare these days :(

Steve, I didn't have the clutch changed since the the box settled down to its old self after a couple of days. I can only put this down to the box oil being changed during the full service it had recently had. Currently on 213k miles and the original clutch, no sign of slip or judder at all. My father owned the car before me from nearly new, and it's been treated very well, so I guess this is not entirely surprising.

There can't be too much life left in it though, and I plan to have it done as soon as it starts showing signs of failure. Also interested in whether to go for Valeo or not.

PS. Yours doesn't have cruise does it?

Quietest Engine Oil for a 2.1TD?

Post by Steveo »

Hi Jon

They're becoming rare eh? I think myself proud then!

Sadly mine doesn't have cruise control, which is one of the few things I really miss from the 2.0 HDI Exec.

Was the 2.1TD Exec ever equipped with it? If so, it must have been an optional extra, right?

Cheers

Steve,

howmanyleft.com reckons only about 800 Exec XUDs left in the country (compared to around 15,000 LXs, for example). They certainly don't appear very often on eBay/autotrader etc.

I've heard of a few 2.1s with factory fitted cruise (certainly an extra), but I've never seen any pictures or firm confirmation. I'm starting to think they were never fitted with them at all. Still, I've been working on retrofitting it, and am certainly getting somewhere, though I need some time to spend on it which I don't have at the moment. See my thread in the electrical section :)

Out of interest, what are the symptoms of yours needing a new clutch?

Hi Jon

What a bizarre website!! Am actually surprised that 800 and 15k numbers are so high....

Gumtree might be a more regular source for them, as they're cheap and it's (mainly) free, but Im guess you know that! I recall that you're not looking to buy one either though...

Am fascinated by your working towards cruise control - please let me know if/when you crack it... Wouldn't MOT have something to say about it do you think, as it's non-standard and potentially dangerous if it overrides manual control?

My symptoms of clutch being worn out are little bit of difficulty engaging first/reverse gear; high bite point (possibly normal) and most of all a bit juddery when pulling away, particurly on hills. I did get gearbox oil changed when I bought it first time round, only 2 or 3k ago, so it's not that.

Between other gears it feels pretty smooth, and I think it's a tough old gearbox.

Cheers

Valeo are orignal from the factory, as are LUK.

Valeo can be bought at good prices from factors.

Thanks jasper :)

Steve, I've put a fair amount of time and money into this car and I know it's been treated well for its entire life, so I'm unwilling to get rid of it.

I know how to wire up cruise, it's all electronic (the Lucas system is the only fully electronic D8 injection system) so it's just a matter of wiring up the cruise stalk to the correct pins on the ECU, and one more for the brake and clutch switches. Four lines to the ECU in total, shouldn't be too hard.

Thanks Guys

I don't know if the cruise control is within my ken, but if you crack it Jon, perhaps I could pay you to do mine...?!

I'll let you know how it goes Steve! Going to be a busy couple of weeks but after that I should have a day to tackle it, I hope :)

More than happy to help with yours if/when I get it working.
