Instrument panel lighting

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Instrument panel lighting

Post by tux2006 »

Recently fitted some new dash lights off ebay that change colour (sad I know but it looked soo cool!!! :cheesy: )
Anyway bumped the front end of car down off the kerb while reversing and all the lights went out! except for one that illuminates the milage counter.
I assume it must have shorted somewhere?
so I checked all the fuses...they were fine.......then refitted the old lamps but still nothing :?
I need to get it sorted can only see my speedo in the dark! and thats only from the residual light from the one remaining working bulb
What has confused me is that all the other indication lights work headlights/handbrake/oil/battery/indicators etc just not the ones that illuminate the dials!
Any ideas anyone???
Assumptions are the mother of all F**k ups.

I had this on another car recently, all of the dash bulbs are fed from the dimmer switch.

Your dimmer may not like the colour changing bulbs? perhaps it has overloaded the dimmer, and the little bump just made it short out internaly because it was running too hot.

Would be worth checking out, also does the other switches light up for the heater controls etc?

Welton's suggestion sounds reasonable. I'd check the rated voltage and power of the bulbs - it should be written on them. I think the Pug ones are 12V, 5W. Could well be the bulbs are say 5V 5W which would mean they'd be very bright and instead of using (I=P/V = 5/12) 417mA they'd be eating an amp each, putting them close to melting point, which a bump could finish off creating a short...

I *think* that works out right doesn't it? It's been a while...

its easy,
lower the steering wheel
remove 3 torx 20 screws at the top of the dials
pull the plastic trim out surrounding the dials
remove 4 more torx 20 screws from the bottom left, bottom right, top centre-left and top centre-right of the dial casing
gently pull the dials from the top down
un clip the yellow and blue multiplugs
remove dials
replace bulbs
and as haynes says reffitting is reversal of removal!
:D

Thanks guys for covering this topic.
It's come as a great deal of help for a lady driver who doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. :)
Lost some lighting on the right side of my 406's instrument panel and was unsure what had happened. :?
Now I know, and you've recruited a new member to your forum!!
Cheers,

Carol

PS. Where can I get the bulbs from? Halfords????
