Re: engine won'tstart
I have'nt done anything with alternator except see if it would spin freely as suggested .It's funny you should say that Jasper because i was starting to think that way, my mates suggesting a tow start tomorrow so i'm going to leave it till then ,i,m running out of dry clothes. Would a 306 2.o ltr hdi starter fit mine cause there, a one going cheap on flea bay

Same starter 306 HDi as 406 HDi.
Re: engine won'tstart
Update. Up till now still won't start, although after changing starter motor it does turn over alot quicker. have checked all the wiring for breaks or scrapes and can find nothing that would prevent starting. We never tried a tow start as my mate reckons it should start off the key and has him baffled as well.Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: engine won'tstart
Yeah if the engine is turning over strong, then I don't see how a tow start would be any different. Have you checked if the engine is getting fuel? Another thing that could be a possibility is the camshaft sensor. Its a real stab in the dark I know but the fact that you found fragments of the aux belt behind the engine means they could easily have damaged it or the leads connecting it and for that matter who knows what else!
I would seriously recommend getting someone with pp2000 to do a diagnostic on your vehicle at this stage

Re: engine won'tstart
Hi Keppler. My mate has done a diagnostic test and all that came up was throttle position sensor so he cancelled that and it showing no faults. Now starting to think about replacing cylinder head
Re: engine won'tstart
Before you think about replacing the c/h
take the Rocker cover off and have alook see if outs broke inthere,
Alot of people have escaped Bent Valves on Cambelt fails etc,
The Rockers get Broke, or other names used Fingers,
Have a search of the Forum mate, some info on this shouid pop up amongst some of the topics,

Hi Lozz
You were spot on .Took the rocker cover off and found a broken rocker so will take the camshaft out tomorrow and see exactly what damage has been done. Reading some of the earlier post bi might get away with just changing the rocker/rockers .Do i have to replace with new ones or can i use second hand and has any body got any ideas of where to get them

Re: engine won'tstart
iwouid have alook round the scrapyards, and see if there are any partialy stripped engines, Most probs most Yards wont let you take the followers as it wouid mean making a running engine into scrap, but itd be worth looking to see if theyve got any you can take them off,norrie499 wrote:Hi Lozz

Iwouidnt like to Guess how much they wouid be new, ibet they wont be cheap,

Re: engine won'tstart
update.... the timing was all to cock, now you cant lock up cam and crank together without contacting pistons and valves, looks like a bent valve not seating properly, does this engine have a woodruff on the cam pulley ??
ps, im the mate he refers to !!

if its got tits or tyres its gonna be trouble
if you cant fix it with a hammer, you have an elecrical problem

Re: engine won'tstart
Well i got a new rocker for £15 from GSF,undone the camshaft and replaced the broken one and made sure there was no debri lying around .When my mate came over i found that i had been locking the crank in the wrong place and ended up having to remove the starter to find the right hole to lock it up.The trouble is we can't turn the engine when we fit the belt.We must have been trying for about 3hrs and still no further forward. My mate has alot of experience as a mechanic but this has him beat.Any suggestions would be appreciated

I hope you haven't forced anything trying to turn the crank!
You need to undo the camshaft holding down bolts after removing the belt and let the valves back off onto their seats then turn the crank until the locking pin is inserted.
Then you should locate the position of the cam locking hole by turning the cam to the correct position and then fit the camshaft mounting brackets making sure that the mounting bracket bolts are smoothly tightening without jamming up....jamming up means the camshaft is in the wrong place, you could bend a valve if you force it.
Now fit the belt and check the timing again, then see if the engine turns after removing the locking pins, turn it carefully by a socket on the crank pulley slowly 2 turns then check the timing and tension it up again.
Forgot to mention......If you are having trouble turning the crank against compression with the camshaft backed off and valves on their seats take out the glow plugs to release compression.
Re: engine won'tstart
I have'nt forced any thing ,as soon as i feel it getting tight i stop that's where Neil comes in handy as I'm a bit ham fisted. I'll try what you suggest tomorrow.Cheers JASPER

Re: engine won'tstart
Hi Jasper
I've done exactly like you said but after 3/4 turn it.s locking up ,it feels like metal to metal
so does it look like i have to take the head off

Re: engine won'tstart
Just one final thing....
Take off the belt again and undo the camshaft holding bolts so the valves are on their seats and try to slowly turn the engine, if it still hits something then you may have a bent valve.
Check the valves in the top of the head for all being the same level in the head, if one or more of them is further down than the others then you definitely have a bent valve(s).
