'Out of Shape' Tyre?

Post by Welly »

Following up on my wheel-wobble problem we managed to get it up on the MOT ramp at my new best-friends  Garage place for a good looky on Saturday.

Bearing in mind, up front, I now have new top mounts, wishbones, ARB drop links and a new inner/outer track rod then all of the front sussy is rock-solid. The drive shafts are solid too.

Upon spinning one of the front wheels and staring like a hawk at the same-spot we saw the tyre would rise and fall very slightly. The MOT man said that, at speed, this 'soft spot' would be exaggerated into a vibration. Anyone had this before? whack these on a balancing machine and they balance fine but the problem appears when loaded-up.

I really need 2 new tyres, the existing ones still have 3.5mm, but I'm skint........AND have TWO long-range Motorway runs to do this month and guess what kinda speed this problem shows up?

Something else; my tyres are 205/50/17's and are fiercely expensive  however if I go for 225/45/17's (direct equiv) they are *much* cheaper (like £40.00 per corner :? ) so this means I'd be up for 4 x tyres and a call to the insewerance for the change in spec. The size change is common on the Old-giffers Forum and apparently the 225/45 is much more common out there on the roads? I will probably go for the new Goodyear Eagle's cos I'm pissed off with wondering if these Kumho's were a mistake on a 220bhp FWD, I don't know whether the constant trying-to-spin the front wheels character of the car has destroyed the tyre structure :|

I've had two similar incidents, both manifested themselves on the back, (but the tyres had both done 10-15k on the front first).
One was a Kumho, the previous one a Goodyear Excellence.
I suspect torque rather than power is the issue, only the Kumho 'enjoyed' the remapped 295lb/ft experience, mind you the standard 235 lb/ft is probably as stiff a test as your T5? (but then mine are only skinny 205/60/15 92V's).

It's an interesting question - they have ratings for speed, load, pressure, traction, treadwear, but torque capacity?

Anybody know?

Try putting your front wheels to the back and the back to the front then see how it feels

Doesn't this just mean the tyre has been carelessly fitted to the rim? Or is that only on motorcycles? :?

Years ago my dad had a car with p-zero nero's on, they repeatedly went out of shape and were huge amounts of money.

Thankfully was a leased car with maintenance included.

I currently have a small vibration and sure it is a tyre out of round. Looking like soon I'll need 3 of them too.

They're fine, so long as you have a compatible steering wheel.........
