Hi Everyone,
I am new to this site and have recently bought a 406 glx td, "R" reg. The speedo is not working and neither is the trip meter or the total miles counter. does anyone have any ideas how to sort this out please ???.
Many thanks,
Pete

Re: speedo, odometer and trip not working
Hi Pete and welcome to the forum.
When you say they're not working do you mean you've got no display on the trip or odometer?
I'd whip the clocks out and make sure both the cables are plugged in properly to the back of the clocks.
If that all looks ok I'd strip the clocks and check for dry joints on the speedo and check the trip/odometer display is seated properly (you'll see what I mean when you open the clocks up)
Here's a good guide to stripping the clocks thanks to Maglite

Re: speedo, odometer and trip not working
Hi and many thanks for all the information and pictures.
The problem I have is that the speedometer is not working at all and the mileage and trip displays can only be read at night when it is pitch black outside the car.
I have been told that as well as this possibly being a clock fault as you suggest, it could also be a damaged / broken gearbox transponder or speed sensor.
I will take a look at the back of the clocks as you suggest as and when I get the chance and will let you know the outcome.
Thanks again for the excellent info and I look forward to speaking again soon.
Cheers,
Pete

No problem, that's what we're on here for.
99% sure dry/cracked solder joints will be responsible for your speedo issue,if you've got a reasonably fine tipped soldering iron and a steady hand it's an easy fix.
Backlight for the trip/odometer, can't remember if it's a screw in bulb or soldered ones. Didn't have to mess with mine so didn't pay much attention but should be obvious once you've opened it all up.

The backlight for the odo/trip is a T5 twist-lock type. I got 10 for about £4 from my LMF.

Re: speedo, odometer and trip not working
Dear all,
Stripped the clocks out today and found the back light bulb for the odometer and trip meter was blown, easy to replace. Regarding the speedo I removed the pcb and couldn't see anything obvious, but part of my problem now is that I don't know what a dry joint looks like. So, even if there was one I don't know what I am looking for. If anyone has any pics of dry joints or can describe what they look like, this would be greatly appreciated. I did notice that the screw holding the trip meter in place was missing and replaced it as it passes through the film with the circuit on it. I was hoping this might complete the circuit for the speedo, but alas no joy.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions so far, you've probably saved me hours and £££££'s already.
Cheers,
Pete

Re: speedo, odometer and trip not working
Pete,
Not got a pic of the actual offending items but nabbed this off google images to give you the general idea.
You do have to completely remove the pcb to see the pins, first time I checked mine I only looked at the white circular cup shaped things in the housing that the pins slot in to.
Once you've got the pcb seperated from the white housing locate the 4 pins for the speedo, at the base of the pins you'll more than likely see hair line cracks.
As you've got it apart anyway you might as well resolder all 4 pins even if they look ok, assuming you have a soldering iron and a steady hand.
