do i need a new clutch?

Post by eezray »

Hi everyone im new to here, and very nice to see many 406 owners here.

i've got a v reg 1999 406 2.0 lx

it has done 38k. only 1 lady owner for last 6 years.

shifting gears are ok, never give me a problem.

but the clutch is really high. I get a little bit judder in 1st gear.

i can smell some smoke when i doing a quick start sometimes.

so do i need a new cluch?

how much would it be cost? :|

thanks.

Hi, and welcome.

The clutch bite is famously high on 406's in fact I find it difficult to get a good driving position because of it.

My clutch is slipping, and has been doing for 8 months, I need to get round to sorting it but it will be a £600.00 job on my HDi as I intend to replace the dual mass flywheel too. My car, I found out, used to be used for International Caravaning

Juddering can be a sign of a weak engine mount or gearbox mount, so might be worth a check.

I shouldn't worry unless you can actually get it to slip by accelerating hard in 4th gear from a slow speed.

as welly said 406 clutches are always high i think there was a modification peugeot did to the clutch pedal on some models but it made no differece, you shouldnt worry though, only if it is extremly hard to go into gear, slips in 4th or 5th gear or the clutch pedal feels like the brake pedal
you could try changing the clutch cable i did this on mine it made it a bit better, due to how the cable is routed it gets cooked by the exhuast manifold and all the grease inside it dries up making the pedal go hard

My clutch is hydraulic, my mechanic said it was soooo light he couldn't believe it. He commented that the cable ones do get a bit stiff.

When you start to creak a bit when you get to my age a stiff clutch is the last thing you need as it hurts you back/hips/knees  .........a stiff crutch at my age though, now that's different

The cable clutch on my D8 was horrible. On the RHD versions the cable has to go through 2 90deg turns which doesn't help the smoothness, plus doesn't it run right past the exhaust manifold just to cook out any lubrication that might be in there?

i wouldnt bother, they'll only charge you so much to tell you, you need a clutch just to get the buisness out of you, i would leave it untill it starts to slip, if it bothers you, then change the clutch cable, you can do it yourself as its quite easy

i would get the clutch cable from the dealer, its only about £40
to fit:
jack up front of the car
slide drivers seat all the way back
remove trim above drivers feet
open bonnet
prise clutch fork with strong screwdriver towards car and detach cable
get under car
in the centre just below steering rack is the cable clipped to the subframe, unlip it with a screwdriver
take note of how the cable is routed
pull the cable from above the gearbox to under the car
get into the drivers footwell, slightly depress clutch pedal with and and unhook the white clip from the hook on the end of the pedal
tie a piece of long and strong string to the white clip end of the cable
get under car again and pull cable out
untie the string and tie the new clutch cable to the string
get back in the car and pull the string untill it appears inside the car, hook the white clip over the pedal,
back under the bonnet pull the cable on to the clutch fork
get under the car and clip the new cable into the subframe
but the car back on the ground
pump clutch pedal 5 times
go for a drive

sorry its a basic guide and i havent got any pics!

and yes your car has a timing belt not a chain, if theres no sign of it being changed get it done with the tensioner, idler/roller and water pump at the same time

i check the pug manul book. it never mention what milage should change the timing belt.

my car has done 38k. no noise from the belt. but a little vibration when it idle.

something wrong with spark plugs? or :frown:

belt change at 72k or 8 years

the idle problem is most likely the stepper motor

Hello Ray,

It's done 38k and was owned by a woman for the last 6 years... well I tell you! It could be a worn clutch lol

The Peugeot cable driven clutches have a self ratcheting mechanism to correct plate wear if I'm not mistaken?

As already mentioned the standard clutches are generically high, even on the hydralic variant and they are quite hard wearing I didn't change my first clutch until around 120k I think it was :D

The vibration that you can hear I very much doubt will be connected to cambelt or tensioner, not with such low milage on it.. I can't say I've ever heard of a peugeot cam belt / tensioners failing so early from the factory.

What area is the vibration coming from?

???

why are you in 4th gear at 15mph?
thats really not going to do your gearbox or bottom end any good

the smell could be a plastic bag on the exhaust
and the dodgy idle will be the stepper motor most likely
it should stay still at 1,000 rpm with the a/c on and with it off at about 950-975 rpm
