Fuel Gauge on a 2003 D9 (2.2 Hdi)

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Fuel Gauge on a 2003 D9 (2.2 Hdi)

Post by exec406 »

Hi

Driving the other day had about 60 miles of diesel left and less than a quarter of a tank according to the computer, then the next day the needle on the fuel gauge has mysteriously shifted to showing half a tank and 240 miles range.

I know this is some kind of fault as I had been watching the fuel slowly drain to around less than a quarter of a tank, then it went to half a tank and has stuck there.

Could this be a fuel gauge sender fault? Anybody any idea of cost? About the same time this happened I had a 'Clean FAP filter urgent' message, but that has now gone off but fuel gauge stays the same.

Thanks

OK thanks. I used to get the same fault now and again after filling up, gauge wouldn't move then it would come back to normal.

Someone said try disconnecting the battery for 10 mins, then waiting a few minutes after connecting battery before using remote key to open door or using key in ignition (to allow system to reboot)

My old d9 110 Rapier used to have a fuel gauge that made no sense,it would be on a 1/4 and i'd put 5ltrs out of a can and it would go to 1/2 and stay there for ages then the low fuel warning would come up on the MFD,my 53' plate exec also has a fuel gauge with a mind of it's own,my answer is to keep a can of diesel in the boot just in case.

Disconnected the battery for 10 mins, connected again and left for a few mins, needle still in same place.

This car has had a fuel tank sensor replaced before, but that one was to do with reading the magnets on the fuel cap so system could inject the Eloys fluid when filling up.

Will fill it up tomorrow to see if needle moves. Will also get a jerry can to be on the safe side.

If you still have the FAP & Eolys system active, you would be well advised to:

a). Avoid adding relatively small amounts of fuel, as this can lead to the system adding too much eolys to the tank, which is wasteful, expensive and in extreme cases can clog everything, (especially the dpf), giving you starting / running problems. Before I removed mine, I always completely filled the tank to avoid this, (which also lets you do 600-odd miles confidently regardles of any fuel guage issues).

b). Seriously consider getting it 'de-FAPPED', this will avoid any possibilty of a wallet-emptying trip to Peugeot, who are apt to recommend a new DPF and additive top-up on any 2.2 HDi, regardless of whether it's needed or not. Will also avoid possible replacement of fuel flap sensor, differential pressure sensor, additive level sensor, to name but a few....

Don't get me wrong, I think the 2.2 HDi is a great engine, it's just so much better without all that supposedly 'green' dpf nonsense.

OK thanks, I will try that, re-fueling to full after getting to say 1/4 tank. I usually top the tank up to keep it near half way rather than 'full to the brim'

Cheers.

OK today filled up with £20 and fuel gauge moved to where I would expect from half a tank.

Originally, had the tank full with 70 litres and have only done 255 miles (all town driving involving a few hills) so the MPG per the computer is 27 (nominal for the 2.2 engine, urban)

So from that I've worked out I've used about 42 litres, which would not be that much off half a tank. So I'm thinking the fuel gauge was showing a much lower level than it should have (below a quarter of a tank) and it has some how 'corrected' itself.

A bit baffling but I think that could be it?

Several times the gauge on mine has moved a little way towards full when I have gone from city driving to country driving. It's as if the gauge is controlled by the computer, not by the tank sender, so that it shows the amount of fuel remaining based on the current manner of driving, not what is actually there.

:arrowu: Not far from the truth. You can access parameters via PP2000, I've noted it has 'raw' & smoothed values for tank contents and presumably sends the latter to the guage, (at least on later fully-mux cars).
