"Engine Antipollution System Defective"During Rain

I had this message come up on my car a while back, Peugeot said the fuel additive (HDi) needed refilling, so I had this done, then the light came back on the next day and this same message. It was booked to go back in to Peugeot, but had a bump in the meantime, which took it off the road for a bit. Due to the bump, it had a full exhaust & cat, minus the DPF filter.

The engine light and this message have now started appearing again, but I think it's only when it's raining. It's been on all week, then we had a dry spell yesterday and it went off. I got in this morning (raining) and it didn't come on, but I drove the car down the road, stopped at a shop and then it came back on again.

So basically, I'm wondering is there some sensor (probably under the car) that can cause this message that's getting wet and shorting out. Can anyone help me out on this one?

'miniman' had something similar before.

Although his is not a 2.2, it is the later HDi with the particulate filter and the fluid stuff.

Basically, when it rained & 'winded' hard the air intake was picking up excessive water mist and actually clogging the air filter element.

He removed the filter and it was wet through

It would be worth looking at the filter just to check, the lack of air flow causes overfueling and soot, which brings the anti polution fault up.

I get the antipolution fault message as well every once in a while, but it's so infrequent that I just ignore it.

I'd be interested in the outcome of your investigations though Neil

DOH!!! I'll get me coat.

Anyway, it's dry again and the light's gone off again. Haven't checked the filter yet, that's for tomorrow.

Dai, as for your message, Deb's car does it now and again, always has. My look on it is as long as it goes out, don't worry. But I'llfecth my handheld code reader down some time. It'll work on yours probably, but 2002 diesels are borderline, and mine doesn't work!

Just checked the air filter and it's bone dry, so any other ideas?

Got in the car this morning and it came on, so as it's not raining, I left it ticking over for 5 minutes, knocked it off, restarted and the light went on. So I got the hose pipe out, sprayed water under the car, started with just the back end, then getting in and starting it. Then I did this with the middle and front, and even under the bonnet. Can I get the light to come back on? No. I'll put money on when we go to Asda later, the spray off the raid will set it off.

Still clueless.....

Davies!!!! Bloody cursed me you have!

Started this morning, thought she felt a bit rough. Went to work OK, but could have sworn I felt the occasional missfire

. Out and about this afternoon, stopped at lights and she cut out

Started straight back up again no problem but now I get the "Antipolution fault" message and the engine management light on every time

When's a convenient time to try it on your code reader Neil?

Now then Dai, I have today just read simular problems with someone on the coupe forum. Spluttering etc and the message. 2 litre engine alo (albeit not HPi, as you're the only person in Britain with that engine). Quite a few said it was probably the fuel filter, which sounds like it might be with you, going back to old school cars when we had to work out what's wrong.

As for trying my code reader, any time. 5 minutes notice should suffice.

Well I've been fiddling with it but can't get rid of the light / message. Anyone got any ideas? What are the possible causes of this message?

the hpi does suffer with coking problems occasionally, be worth chucking a set of plugs in it first and leave the battery disconnected and bridge the postive and negative battery terminals to reset the ecu while doing them

i bet the particle filter needs to be cleaned and the ecu needs to be told its done

Cheers James, I'll get some plugs tomorrow (Happily I now work about half a mile from a main stealer). Was thinking about disconnecting the battery earlier on but I decided to ask the advice of you good people first. At the risk of sounding thick I'm not so sure about "bridging" the terminals, I assume that means to disconnect both the terminals from the battery and touch them together? Makes me a bit nervous
