additional heating ?

I had this 'additional heating' come up on an ECU code read recently.
Basically, it is fitted to HDi's to be sold to extremely cold climates.
Because an efficient Diesel engine takes an age to warm up some of these models had 'additional heating' it takes the form of two circuits, one which does something with the fuel itself (located in the wheel arch) and another which has electrical resisters located in series with the heater matrix to help warm up the coolant and therefore the cabin more quickly.

additional heating was fitted to all HDi's, but as welly says, because they run so efficiently, next to no heat is wasted, so there needs to be a way to warm up the engine, in our 406's its in the heater matrix, but its primary purpose is to give hot air in the cabin within about 30 seconds of starting, on the 306 HDi, there are glow plugs in the thermostat housing, this is a more efficient method of warming the engine, you just have to wait longer for hot air in the cabin

yes, the moment you unlock the car from cold, and the temperature out side is quite low, the BSi comes to life, it tells the climate control to put recirc on, and activates a heating element in the heater matrix, it works on a low setting to start with, then once the engine is started, it works flat out, drawing arround 40 amps, for 2 minutes i believe, providing lovely toasty hot air within about 30 seconds of starting the car

I've just been out there and tested it.
The air off temp to start with was 10.6 deg C (car in garage) the coolant was very cold.
Well bugger me after 3 minutes the air off temp rose to 22.8 deg C and the coolant was still cold. I even felt the (cold) water connections to the matrix at the bulkhead!
I did not know about this but, thinking about it, if I leave the car running for 10 min in the morning the interior is allways toasty and I can even smell that 'hot heater matrix' smell, you know like hot metal kinda thing.
I just thought the heater matrix was fed straight off the head before the thermostat and was just efficient.
No wonder you are after a HDi fella.
Tonight I was wondering when the last time I filled my car up, because you can forget you know, It was 6th Jan when I got the exhaust fitted. I put £40.00 in of BP ultimate and I have done 200 miles since then
and it still says 150 miles left on the display

I have another problem !. this one will challenge you all. it has me stumped and has done for six weeks. here goes, i have another 406 an estate 110 exec. problem is i changed the battery then nothing just spins over but will not start ,rac man came and said (new HDI PUMP ) so new one on, still no start, bought a geniscan gs400 code scanner connected it up and all it says is (linking error) car towed to pug dealer, found two wires broken in harness repaired and guess what, (cannot connect to ECU) so any idea`s please help, i know you can do it for me

sounds like an immobiliser fault, the transponder in the key is not unlocking the ecu, as due the wiring fault it being locked, there may still be a break somewhere, or it maybe an ecu fault

i expect you are right, i still cannot get the scanner to connect just tried it on my other one, instant connection just a p0380 code came up.. put it on the 110 and nothing except (failure to connect )

Oh man I so want a D9 now. Maybe I should get a halogen heater and big fat inverter ;) mind you for that money I could just get the stealers to fix the heated seat... ;)

This morning, I tested the heater again.
The air coming out of the footwell vents near the gearstick was 2.3 deg C. Started it up and within 2 minutes it was at 12.6 deg C, 2 more mins was 22 deg C, 2 more was 35 deg and within 10 mins of starting the car (and driving 3 miles) the air temp was 47 deg C the water gauge was only just approaching 70 deg.

I'm not 100% (but know a James who is), but if you've got a similar scanner to me (an OBDII scanner), it won't work with 406's as tehy are ODB1. Are you sure the heated seat is broken? when mine stopped working I just wiggled around with the connectors and got it going again

No idea what the cause of the problem is, but with my bad back at the moment there's no way I could even get down to fiddle with the connectors. I've given them all good wiggles in the past though with no effect :/
