Peugeot 406 hdi 110 engine rattle rattle
After travelling for 80 miles this morning i stopped in a carpark anyway i noticed that when i revved the engine to 2000rpm when the vehicle was stationary i noticed that the engine rattled or tapped from the engine bay on the drivers side. The vehicle was only serviced and mot'd 2 weeks ago and nothing was picked up then also the car has only done 63k its a year 2000 w regcan anyone enlighten me as to the problem.

Mine does this too.adam03031980 wrote:After travelling for 80 miles this morning ...............the engine rattled or tapped from the engine bay .................
It seems to be the Bottom Pulley, it's a good idea to replace then if they rattle all the time or when you first start it up but they seem to rattle, or tick, after fast runs.
If you go back to the car a short while later it will have gone.
Some have said on here that it's actually the ECU that ticks and if you stop the car, turn the key around 180 degrees and put it back in it will stop. It sounds like a load of bollox but people do say it works. Never tried it though.
I say it is wear in the bottom pulley, but see what others say.
Here's what Supafrisk told me, she does monster mileages in these:
Tickingwise, I told you in another thread I had a mad noise like ticking, sort of tackatackatacka that only manifested after long runs, if I turned the engine off and restarted it, it went.
My peugeot mechanic said it was a noisy ECU and to turn the ignition key round. This not only solved the problem but it went completely away after a month and I haven't had the noise back since! I think you posted back on another thread asking WDF is a noisy ECU - I don't know but if my mechanic tells me to try something and it works, I'm not going to knock it!

hi do you mean turn off the ignition completely then back on again ie backwarsd as if turning the engine off then forwarsd as if to start it again, i havent either heard of a noisy ecu, i had an inkling it is a pulley but god knows which one and how to tell i have noticed the fan belt is more to one side of the alternetaor and one of the other pulley wheels leaving a bigger gap on the other side not sure if its moved or if its meant to be like that

The bottom pulley is literally the large one at the bottom of the engine (the crankshaft).
If there is ANY doubt about your pulleys/belt get it checked out by a decent mechanic.
Ultimately if the bottom pulley separated it will throw the belt off and can rip through the timing belt cover and snap the cam belt and make a right mess. If your lucky, it will just throw the belt off and the Battery Light will come on and the PAS will go stiff.
To be honest I'm not sure why it can cause a lot of damage, unless the belt gets 'wound up' around the pulley putting strain on the engine.
I bet James knows why

im here,
the crank pulley is very heavy, and even though a diesel engine does not rev high, the sudden torque of turning it, can shatter it and throw parts of it through the timing belt covers faster and with more effort than if it was spinning at a high rpm, but more often then not, the altenator belt does get wrapped round it, the crank pulley gets stuck and the timing belt is shredded as it cannot turn or at the very least it jumps

usually its the crank pulley, ive never heard about a noisy ecu though, seems a bit farfetched too me and supa's mechanic does sound like a bit of a muppet(no offence supa), but its just my opinion

as you open the bonnet facing the front of the car, look to the left front, where the power steering pump is, theres a black belt attached to it, get a torch and follow it down the side of the engine, where it gets to the bottom and seems to dissapear under a pulley, you will probably need to remove the engine cover to see it, to remove it, jack up the car, remove the drivers side front wheel, and wheel arch liner, then you should see this huge nut, and a round thing with a belt wrapped round it, thats the pulley, you need to remove that belt you see to get the pulley off, ive never taken one of those belts of on a HDi so that bit i cant tell you though im sure someone knows or someone with a haynes manual can tell you, once the belt is off, get and assitant to sit in the car put it in 5th gear and hold on the brakes, then undo the big nut, and it will be bloody tight then just pull the pulley off
and as the haynes manual says reffiting is the reversal of removal!
