REPLACING AUTO TRANSMISSION FLUID

Hi, guys,

Whilst servicing my GTX auto estate, I made the mistake of taking out the auto transmission drain plug rather than the engine sump plug!

The car's done nearly 64,000 so changing the fluid will probably do it some good. However, I have two questions:

1. I've read on here that the fluid has to be the right type, i.e. Esso ATF 4HP20-AL4, presumably not the sort of stuff you can get from Halfords? Any idea where I can get some in the Sutton area of Surrey please?

2. I'm pretty sure I've got an AL4 gearbox as it's got the 'Park Lock' on it, i.e. you can't move the selector without turning the ignition on and pressing the brake pedal. My Haynes manual says that the way to check the fluid level on an AL4 is using the 'level screw' in the drain plug. Problem is my drain plug doesn't have a level screw, it's completely plain. Any ideas how I can get the level right please? Without this screw my only option seems to be to pour 4.5 litres into it, but I gather the level is pretty critical?

No need to reply to this message now, I've found the answers for myself.

For anyone who's interested, what I thought was the drain plug is in fact the level screw! I've now noticed that it fits into a much larger hex (probably around 24 mm) which is the drain plug itself. The level screw is 19 mm hex.

Having consulted my local Peugeot dealer, the drain plug itself is hollow so the level screw screws into it and the hole is extended upwards by a metal tube. It is the length of this tube which determines the fluid level. The level screw just lets out surplus fluid above the level of the tube, it doesn't drain the gearbox.

Also got the correct transmission fluid from my local Peugeot dealer (around £12 a litre).
