Teenagers, or todays whinge?

Post by scotty73 »

Well the story goes yesterday i finally admitted defeat and told Dai i can't make the Gayton trip on Sunday because i've spent most of the week resting my legs as my ankles and feet have swollen up due to new blood pressure meds, some days by about 3pm i have a job to stand on them.
So teenagers, my eldest turns 15 next month and were having nothing but VAGINA DRAMA with her, she's talented as f*ck but thinks people dont think so, you tell her off she looks at you like she wants to kill you and no matter what you do for her she always looks down in the dumps.

So last night we sat her down and had a good chat and things seem to have calmed down a bit... sooo in her wisdom the mrs decided we all need to get away and give her a good weekend... by get away i mean camping... oh camping that's when she looks really miserable nice move love oh and what about me supposedly taking it easy? you know thats why i'm not going to Gayton dontcha?? because i've had a job to walk?... oh walking you'll want me to do loads of that on the beach or canal or wherever it is you decide we're going

Thing is she knows i wont say no to getting away from here especially if there's a pub involved :P
Anyway rant over but is anyone elses teenager like this?

I have no experience of teenage daughters - my step-son is 18 at present and aside from the aforementioned vagina drama (not especially applicable), just about everything else applies. He is a good kid but is prone to all the normal teenage hormonal mood swings, bizarre sleeping patterns, some interest in things that involve him getting stuff from us, very little interest in him doing housework (and doing a half-assed job when he does), and getting angry and breaking his own stuff in frustration.

My Daughter is 14 and is a champion moaner. She *hates* being seen with Mum or Dad in her own town (in case she gets spotted being with her parents, which is 'gay' apparently) at home or in a different town - no problem!

I am the only one who can really speak to her and bring her down to the level she should be at (a child) I get her doing and saying silly stuff so we end up pissing ourselves laughing (she'll have tears rolling down her face).

Something you may find odd is that I let both my kids swear in the house and I mean proper no holds barred swearing  you have to face it they will swear and do swear away from you so I decided to let them go for it  we are a nice family in a nice area and both my kids are intelligent and well behaved but this bit of language freedom has worked wonders. Our household is a happy one and NONE of this swearing is done in anger, it is done out of joy, frustration or piss-taking. My daughter was having some problem with another girl at school and for her to be able to tell us she was a fat ugly f*cking cI_Int was very liberating. I have to state they don't go around swearing constantly for the hell of it - that would be stupid but if they need to or feel it will enhance a point then they can - a bit like calling the postman a 'twat' for forcing that Amazon parcel through the door instead of ringing the bell.

My lad is 16 and has just gained 6 x B's, an A'star', an A, a Distinction in IT and an A-level in critical thinking. I am very close to him and he still comes to me for a hug - as does my daughter.

I've never had a jot of trouble with either of them, my lad in fact visited an old couple last year (at 15) to ask for his remote-control mini-helicopter thing back (it was stuck in their tree) the couple were so impressed with his manner they actually wrote a letter to the local newspaper to commend his manner and education.

I can speak to my kids about anything, I tell my lad when he's getting spots on his face and help him keep his skin clear with products and advice, I tell my daughter her hair looks greasy or her shoes don't look right - anything! I say it all and I believe, no I know, that this 'openness' allows all sorts of worries to be discussed and resolved. Most teenagers are grumpy because they have a worry and don't know what to do about it. We must speak to kids not bellow instructions at them, they are not stupid they are inexperienced.

I think you can't beat a well-chosen swear word these days. I still wouldn't swear in front of my Mum and Dad even today - and guess what? my childhood was a stuffy controlling existence with very little joy - something I work hard at preventing with my own children.

Now I've said that you can all go and f*ck off you bunch of twats

Welly, your parenting style sounds exactley like my perants! Personally I'd say they've done a f*cking good job

I'm 19 and since the age of 16 I've had no issues with my perants when staying at home by myself, going where I want when I want with anyone I want etc.

My sister is now 17 and she acts like a 12 year old. She picks arguments with everyone, she can't be trusted on her own (she'll fill the house up with her mates and not clean up afterwards). She's also generally grumpy and you struggle to make a conversation with her without her going off on one.

We were both brought up the same way and never has one had more than the other.

Unfortunatley though the last year or so she's playing hard done by because my parents won't let her stay at home by herself, or go out till silly o'clock in the morning like they did with me. Simply because she cannot be trusted to look after the house or come home on time.
Also I have worked since the age of 16 (part time when in college) but my sister cannot hold down the job. As soon as shes made to do any work she gets angry and quits because it's 'slave labour'

She has allot of growing up to do.

Now I've said that you can all go and f*ck off you bunch of twats

i must agree with this. my parents are very anti swearing. they have never swore in front of me,my younger brother or sister. when i was a child the word "knackered" was considered swearing so you can only imagine what sort of reaction more "hardcore" words would bring.they say there is no need for it and it brings nothing to a conversation . now this sounds like i was bought up in the 40's or something but i'm 32 ,so i'm talking the 90's here.
even recently i have tried to eplain as welly has said above that, i cannot see anything wrong with a swear word, that accentuuates how you feel, and isn't spoken in anger but still they can't see it  so i too don't swear in front of my parents.
but as i am now a parent myself , all be it my daughter is only 2, i too will be bringing my daughter and any future kids up in the same sort of enviroment that welly has bought his own children up in. although me and the mrs are havin to kerb the swearing as our daughter is copying every word she hears at the minute and ya can't have a 2 year old goin round saying f**k, s**t bas***d can ya?? but at school they will be swearing with their mates , i know i did at 6 or seven years old.
i myself swear like a trooper and often think it's because i wasn't allowed to swear as a child.

Me to but i think it's because i'm a gobby little c*nt
Fair points about upbringing i grew up with swearing but mostly my parents friends i never swore in front of my parents until me and dad started course fishing.
Mams a different kettle of fish (pardon the pun) she sometimes ignores my swearing then other times she'll say OI LANGUAGE, to which i reply. English mam with some Welsh swear words thrown in..... she then gives up.

One person i won't swear in front of though is my gran.

Tis food for thought

I tell my son he can swear as much as he likes away from us, but in the home, as we don't use swear words whenever possible, we expect the same from our son

I guess there are so many parameters at work here, there is no known formula for saying what is right or wrong, and what works for one person works for another.
Take my work in the gym as an example, whilst i'm having good success at what i'm doing ( 7.5stone lost in 8 months ) it may not work for others.
We, and everyone around us is an individual, and trying to get everyone to confirm to the same is never going to happen, and would make for a dull world

Back to the swearing, I don't think I turned out too bad, and I don't remember my parents swearing when I was younger, and if I hear my dad swear now, it comes as a shock.
We didn't swear at home, but just think it was out of respect, but if it works in your current situation, then so be it.

I don't claim to be a great parent, I merely just do what I think is right, and try to bring him up as best as I can, and yes, some swearing is probably quite apt, but an overuse can just mean a poor grasp of the language in your inability to express yourself - just my opinion, so don't take offense you feckers

I do have fun with my son, as he can be a pain in the arse - personal hygiene ( had enough and INSIST he goes for a shower on a daily basis, otherwise if I left it up to him, he wouldn;t go, but hey, that's teenage boys for you ) - he can be right moody, but hey, hormones are all over the place aren't they.
Generally he's well behaved, and although he doesn't get the best academic results at school, he has won awards at school for the amount of effort he puts in, but then the misses and me have installed into him, we don't care what the grades are, as long as he's tried his best, which he seems to do, so surely you can't ask for more than that, and hopefully grades will come in time from the effort he puts in ( fingers crossed :cheesy: )
