Need to replace xantia thinking about 406

Post by fotobright »

I need to replace my xantia, which I run on veg oil. The hydraulics are getting too expencive to fix. I'm thinking about 406 with the bosch fuel pump as a replacement.

A guy up the road has a 406 TD estate, 154,000 on the clock, 8 month MOT. I went round to see but it doesn't start, which he had failed to mention in the AD! He says it needs new glow plugs. He also said it was a bit slow pulling up hills.

I know what your thinking and you'd be right but at £300 maybe its worth a punt.

If it is just the glow plugs that annoying but fixable. The air intake to the air filter was ripped and i'm wondering if that would contribute to the power loss up hill?

I know I know it could be a whole range of things, i'm just trying to eliminate a few and thought you guys might have some good advice, apart from walk away ;)!

Any advice would be most welcome

If its ripped in way that plastic is not allowing air to go inside properly, that could be the problem, but i think that isnt problem here.
Maybe it was sitting there a while and needs some cleaning, air system, plugs, new filters...air filter could be problem too if its plugged with garbage.

You said xantia was running on veg oil,do you have to clean it more freq.,how do you do the mixage of oil and diesel inside, which %.

300 doesn sound much for 406,some mechanic would be able to tell you what the problem is and is it worth buying.

If it turns over but doesn't start I'd be giving the primer bulb a squeeze, if it's soft it's an air leak problem. Not many options on where the leak is and all easy/cheap fixes. fuel filter lid, leak off pipes and injector seals are the usual suspects. Mine is a bitch to start since I serviced it, need to check the fuel filter lid seal but it has p*ssed down every time I've had a spare 5 mins.
154,000 is nothing on that engine if it's been looked after reasonably well.
If the air pipework isn't allowing a good flow of nice cool air to the turbo that certainly would account for a lack of pull up hills and again atrip to a local scrap yard should fix that for not a lot.

The estate is worth the best part of £200 in scrap value so if it will start and drive and you don't mind getting your hands dirty it's well worth a punt at £300.

I'm currently watching a 1996 'P' 1.9td LX saloon on ebay that a dealer wants £1,300 for, if he gets it I'm selling mine for £1,250 :cheesy:

All good reply's

Your totally right, my gut reaction was that the car maybe just needed a bit of basic TLC. I was just a bit concerned that as i'm already driving around in the Xantia which is not in the greatest shape that I didnt want another car sitting around in the yard, with a lot of issues. I thought it was a bit odd that the car was advertised as VGC when actually it wasnt turning over and the guy changed is story from saying it was injectors to glowplugs. His car history story wasnt matching up in places either.

I dunno i just wanted a car I could take for a test run and say, 'yes mate that ok, heres £300', and drive off at full speed into the sunset :)

Trouble getting up hills? Could be a seized turbo. With the changing story, "VGC but it doesn't run" etc, I'd give it a wide berth.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Just replaced my 406 with a Xantia! :-)
The hydraulics are not very complex or difficult. Just garages are scared 'cos they don't understand them.
The rest of the car is typical of PSA of the era. Probably closest to a D8 406 in the electrics department.

I think there are enough 406s around that you can be a bit pickier.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.
