Hello fellas,
New to the forum but not to Pugs. Trem from Peugeotforums recommend I sign up.
I'm currently looking for a 406. I've had about a dozen Pugs over the years, starting with a 205, then moving to a 205 CTI, 306's of all variety (dTurbo, petrol Meridian and various other diesels), three 307s and a 407. I've had Planet for a couple of years and do a bit of freelance diagnostics around Merseyside.
So I know the 307 and 306 inside out but not much about the 406. I'm guessing like with the 307 that the 90bhp is the least problematic and won't have dual mass flywheel or DPF? And with trim levels, the LX is one of best.
Is there anything else I should be considering? Do these have separate climate controls like the 407?
There's a few 406s around my local area on Ebay (CH65) if anyone wants a peek at the ones I'm considering and can offer any advice.
Thanks in Advance
Andy (Gibbo)

Hello & welcome to the forum.
Obviously, I'm biased but a 2.2 HDi's what's needed to 'motivate' the biggish 406, (IMHO).

Re: Noob from Wirral
Hi & welcome.
I see it like this:
* 1.9 TD to run on veg.
* HDi 90 cheapest to run (cheapest to buy and tax, highest MPG, but of course you can't use veg). (Final drive longer than the 1.9.) This is also the slowest of all 406s off the line, but it's a very capable motorway cruiser -- just once you get it up to speed.
* HDi 2.2 most fun, and best for motorway cruising because final drive is longer than the 90 and the extra torque means it doesn't have to be worked as hard.
Indeed, no DMF on the 90.
Only the 2.2 HDi has a FAP. However, removing it is now a well understood process. Besides Doggy on here, the Coupe Club are the experts in this department and at least one member offers a de-fapping service. Therefore I think this is a bit of a non-issue on this engine.
Trim level: down to personal preference really. My preference is to get as much as possible!
Fully multiplex wiring was introduced arround 2001. Some people think this is a problem (I don't). However, in the earliest of these in the COM2000 unit the indicator stalks go floppy: something to check carefully.
On cars with sat nav (type C display) the computer has two trips and instantaneous readout (like the 407). The type B display (that has a button at each side of it) has a lower resolution and only has one trip. I am unusual in liking (and using) the sat nav.
Why did you get rid of the 407? (I'm thinking of swapping for a 407 2.2 HDi 170.)

Re: Noob from Wirral
Thanks very much for the info so far guys. The power - weight issue, was similar on the 407 I had, it being only a 1.6. Which models (if any) have the dual mass flywheel?
These are the ones closest to me I had my eye on:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261106776769? ... _897wt_701
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390476574130? ... 1059wt_984
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251119612636? ... 1059wt_984
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230856817263? ... 1059wt_984
The 407 was something of a project. A local garage had it, and it was plagued with faults that looked like it would cost them several hundred pounds to repair. They had the "anti pollution fault" on screen and when I put on Planet and showed them the fault list they went white with fear for their profit margins!
But some new glow plugs, fan relay, EGR valve, a pressure wash of the DPF and a good service and it was sorted!
The problem was that it was too big for the car parking space at my apartment and was forever getting "dinged" by my neighbours car doors. But that's sorted now, I have a wider space. I'd have another tomorrow if it wasn't for all the issues that seem to plague them - particularly the common dual climate control fault which means the dash needs to come out to fix the heater flap. I also do less motorway mileage now so the regen issue is a big factor. The 306 and 406 sections on the aforementioned forum never get much problems, hence the retro step!
Incidentally, I've a 307 for sale if anyone is on the lookout for one:

Now they look nice. Can't find any round here though, so I'm plumping for the GLX or LX.omega wrote: but the best alrounder is a 2,1 diesel in the exective style

2.1 Execs are rare as hen's teeth these days. Those that own them are holding onto them on the whole. If you can get a GLX or LX in good condition then that's great, and you can add some bits from the Exec yourself (leather seats etc).
The 2.1 is an excellent and reliable engine

Re: Noob from Wirral
That's a good idea. I'm handy with the spanners!
I think this is the nearest executive model to me but the seller hasn't made much of an effort to warrant the trip:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1999-Peugeot- ... 1214wt_984
Incidentally, I'm the Gibbo marked on the Planet Map in Liverpool. I'm actually in Wirral and can cover Merseyside and Lancashire right over to Rochdale (where I go weekly to see my daughter) and Flintshire. So if anyone needs a diagnostic, feel free to get in touch.

Re: Noob from Wirral
Well I tell you what chaps, if you want a 406 don't waste your time looking in the North West. I looked at at least half a dozen yesterday and they were just about all ready for the scrap yard.
There were smoking engines, broken electric windows (with the window down and the back seats soaked!), filthy interiors, and ominous knocking sounds when driving. And some of these had the cheek to have them up for sale for £1500. I seriously think dealers should ensure all cars they sell have 12 months MOT on them.
One car had those white sheets of paper in the footwells. A nice touch for a car with clean carpets but I think the purpose of these were to stop the filth from the carpets getting onto my shoes.
There was just no effort of pride from the garages, as if THEY were doing ME a favour by offering broken crap.
Anyway, rant over! If you do happen to see something half decent, send me a PM!
