Re: 406 estate diesel which one
This is one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions - D8 or D9? How much? Veg oil? Possible insane power output? Insurance costs?
If age or the ability to run on veg isn't an issue then a 2.1, without doubt.

Re: 406 estate diesel which one
I am a bit biased but i'm on my 2nd 110 bhp hdi estate, the first was a Rapier and the present is a 53 plate Executive,i get 40+ mpg tootling around town and just over 50mpg on a run,get a post march 2001 and the tax is only £135 a year,i've had the Exec remapped to a claimed 140 bhp.

Get a 2.2 & end it.robb wrote:I dont want to start a war

Remapped, they're quicker than any of the petrols barring a v6, great fun and still 40+ mpg.

Re: 406 estate diesel which one
Having owned 3 406 diesel estates, one of which is a mighty 1.9 xud engine, here are my thoughts.robb wrote:Hi again guys I have been looking at a couple of 1.9 diesels would any one know if they are underpowered?
The 1.9 and 2.1 xud engines score big marks for their simplicity and older school engineering. My 1.9, while being the slowest is not underpowered. I use it as a 7 seater and sometimes to tow as well. Once you get used to lots of gear changing it's fine. A bit more tractorish, but ok.
Having said that, my newest one is an HDI110, which has a lovelly combination of power and economy. If you want still more power, then buy Doggys 2.2 and be amazed at its grunt.
I think that the bottom line is that they didn't make a bad diesel 406. They all have their plus and minus points. But your budget should get you a really nice one.

Re: 406 estate diesel which one
I towed our caravan for the first time with the 406 down to Cornwall and back in the summer and it coped o.k. although it did get a bit hot on the hills on the A361 but the caravan does weigh in at approx 1350 kgs,it's going to tow it down to Dorset at the end of Oct so i'll see how it goes then,it averaged 30-35 towing which i was more than pleased with.

Re: 406 estate diesel which one
I towed my van 90 miles today in my 2.0 110 and couldn't keep to the speed limit all the way home so you'll have no probs towing a microlite with one... In fact it would be like towing a tent
How light are those things? i had one overtake me earlier he must have been doing 80mph i think he was driving a Laguna.

.My 2.0 petrol pulls it very well and seldom have to change down unless theres a particularly steep hill

I do try to keep to about 60mph nowadays.
