wierd noise when pressing clutch 2001 406

Post by spudder69 »

Hi,
new to this so take it easy lol

i have a 2001 model 406 2.0l rapier diesel, the problem i have started a few weeks ago...
whenever i press the clutch or hold it down say when im sat at a set of lights or something, i hear a noise like a loudish rubbing noise its really annoying, at 1st i thought my clutch was on its way out but its been about a month now and its not even slipping so im now clueless as to what it could be, its not really really loud but loud enough to hear clearly when window is down!!!
the only way i can explain the noise is it sounds like something is spinning quite fast and every half a spin or so it makes a scraping noise... forgive for the scetchy explaination but like this....

(cchhh--------cchhh------cchhh---------cchhh--------cchhh---------cchhh--------cchhh) only when clutch is pressed tho :-( just had 12mths mot too :-( jest need a few oppinions as i no if i took it to a garage they would say new clutch straight away but i think its something else as its not slipping,....
help please..............

Hi there, welcome :cheesy:

Umm, before we start scaring you, is this a 90bhp or a 110?

well its failed so it will eventually seize and rub on the fingers of the spring and they will snap, then you will have no clutch and will have to replace the lot. replace it now as its just the release bearing it will be cheaper then a new clutch

I thought it'd be wise to ask :supafrisk:

If it eats through the diaphragm spring then the clutch won't release (bin there...). Seeing as how the gearbox has to come off to replace the bearing it'd probably be wise to replace the clutch while you're there (unless you know it's almost new).

You make it sound like your car has masses of electrical problems  What else is wrong with it?

at 174k, if it's still on its original clutch then it'd be foolish to not replace it along with the bearing
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Hey guys...
Thanks for all the feedback so far... Yeah it's still on its original clutch at 174k lol and touch wood it's original battery :-) as far as elec probs go only front passenger window works and had a few warning lights on dash but only 1 that's on now is airbag and I no that's a prob under drivers seat so il leave that be for now... Iv done a bit of digging and the clutch comes as a 3 price kit with the bearing being 1 of the peices ???? So do you think having to replace it all anyway I might as well just wait till it goes??? Might get a few weeks or months out of it yet??? Fingers crossed... Typical as iv just forked out £350 to get it through its mot lol.. :-(

I would If I wasn't warm tucked up in bed haha
With it being on its original clutch and on 174k would it just be wise to wait for it to go and replace it with the 3 piece clutch kit it costs £110 plus labour so whilst they have the box off it might as well be done at the same time?? And on a guess will it last 2weeks till pay day??? Lol
Thanks guys

The trick to making it last is to use it as little as possible. Don't make unnecessary journeys. If you're not brave enough to change gear without the clutch, you can at least save some wear & tear by slipping it into neutral when slowing down, then you only need one clutch operation to move off again. Avoid holding it on the clutch at junctions.

2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Obviously, if you do most of your journeys on a motorway (or some other clear, long road), then it will last a lot longer than inner city driving every day.

But yeah, replace it. Chester - jasper5 isn't far from you in Manchester. He's done several clutch changes on this forum, mine included (despite it still being relatively serviceable). Feels like a new car - do it.
