Please help. I have a S reg 406 estate 1.8.
The cigerette lighter is not working at all, and the clock is working, yet the backlight is not making it useless at night!
Are these likely to be fuse faults and if so what fuses are they?!?
The car came without a users manual, so I am really struggling.

Re: Faulty Cigerette Lighter and Clock
Hi mate and welcome,
The backlight for the clock is accessed by gently persuading the clock out with a small flat bladed screwdriver. They do go brittle with age so be careful removing it and unscrewing the twist lock bulb holder. I destroyed mine changing the bulb but luckily had a spare from my old car. Breakers yards are the best bet if you damage yours.
As for the cigarette lighter I'd check the fuse first, can't remember which it is off the top of my head (fuse 1 springs to mind but I could be completely wrong) but it's a 2 position fuse in the cabin fuse box (by your right knee as you sit in the drivers seat, behind the immobiliser pad if you have one fitted). There are only 2 fuses with 2 positions, one for the stereo the other for the lighter.
If the fuse is good check the connection to the lighter itself, the lighter assembly allegedly has a twist lock mechanism and should twist and pull out of the centre console however I've never managed to get 1 out like that yet!! I ended up removing the centre console but I was replacing some of the heater ducting anyway so it wasn't an issue.
Like I said check the fuse first and if no joy the centre console removal is pretty straight forward

Re: Faulty Cigerette Lighter and Clock
Many thanks... Got clock out successfully and bulb is blown.
Woman question? Whats a 2 position fuse?
Woman question? Whats a 2 position fuse?
Re: Faulty Cigerette Lighter and Clock
2 position fuse is one that can be in one of two positions
When you look at the nice neat line of fuses you will see one or two out of line, stepping forward like a volunteer - those would be 2 position There may also an extra hole showing where a fuse could be moved out of line. That is a 2 position fuse in the other position.
The purpose of a 2 position fuse is to select either a switched (on the key) or permenant power feed to the other side of the fuse. For example the lighter socket can be set to either be run from the ignition switch or it can be always live ready to charge a phone, sat nav, etc

Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

Strangrzt thing! Went to Halfords and bought bulb for clock. Man came and looked at my fuses and had a prod about and said they all lookex fine. So bought s new cigerette lighter whilst there. Fitted bulb in carpark and drove off. Looked down and old lighter was working!
Took new lighter back and thanled Halfords man for his magic hands!
Bleedin' shame my satnavs knackered now!!

Re: Faulty Cigerette Lighter and Clock
sounds like a dirty contact on the blade of the fuse, if he's taken it out to look at it refitting it has made a proper contact - result

Sorry to hijack this a little bit, but how on earth do you get the cigarette lighter out of a D8 centre console? The console is not in the car at the moment but I can't see how it comes apart.

Re: Faulty Cigerette Lighter and Clock
Thanks for this I have been wondering for ages after I blew the cig and dash fuse, why I could no longer get the lighter to charge my phone turned off! I was trying to add a perm live, and forgot to take note of where the fuse went!!2 position fuse is one that can be in one of two positions

So where dose it go to be perm on?
