Trailer laws

Post by trem1 »

Anybody know the current law regarding towing trailers.

A friend was telling me the laws are changing and only factory built trailers with serial numbers and chassis plates will be permitted on the roads.

Basically, any new trailer manufactured after 29th October 2012 will have to be made to certain standards and plated to show it's weight and capacity.
And about time to. Us comerciall users have done this for years. We have to get our trailers mot'd every year to.

I presume that's where they're going with this, forcing them to have MOTs and thence registration with their own number plates, like what they does here.

It just applies to new trailers, but it will be the thin end of the wedge. It's the old story, a few people with rusty old trailers force the law to be changed.

But, as Steve says, most of the rest of the world is much tougher than us on this one. There are other things to, like carrying spare bulbs. most countries require this now.
