Dead pleased with the 406

Post by grasmere59 »

Well we've just come back from a weeks holiday and a 750 mile trip with 425 of them with the 406 fully loaded with 2 largish dogs towing nearly 1400 kgs of caravan, well the 406 isn't going to break any world speed records but it'll go up hill and down dale all day long at 55-60 mph and return 30-35 mpg. When we arrive on site and set up we have an 09 plate Range Rover one side of us and a 60 plate Volvo 4x4 something or other on the other, when i have a look around i have the second from oldest car on the whole site amongst the nearly new Disco',Rangies etc,i get to thinking that looking at all those posh motors i probably paid (£1380 a year ago for the 406) less than there last set of tyres or there last major service!,i know there towing much heavier caravans than ours and probably need a 4x4 but it made me chuckle,i too have factory fit electric memory heated leather seats, satnav, folding mirrors,ABS/ESP,sunroof etc etc.You can almost see other folks looking down on you with our choice of towcar although our caravan can cut it with the best of them.I used to tow with my BMW but returning just 20-25mpg it's a no brainer using the 406 and the 406 is such a practical car in every way and in nearly 1000 miles towing and 10,000 solo in the last 11 months it hasn't missed a beat (i've talked that one up now!) so now it's on with the winter tyres and bring on the winter!

As i've said for years, an HDI 110 estate is a hugely underated car. Possibley only surpassed in usefulness by my 7 seat estate. If only it was an HDI 110 to.

Know how you feel. :cheesy:

It was highly amusing to watch big Mercs & Audis having to move out the way on some of the mountain climbs in France and Spain this summer, since they lacked the beans to keep up with a 10-year old 406.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Isn't it great when stuff works?

Although my 90 is distinctly lacking in the beans department, it makes up for it in MPG.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.
