406 wiper problem

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 wiper problem

Post by metalgear »

Hi ppl, just new here but hope you can help

I've got a wiper problem that's already been covered in the 'Knowledge Base Articles' thread but that's for an 97 reg car,
mine is a x-reg 2000.
I've been under the fuse box taken it out (sort of) but no blue box (wiper relay) there only a blue connector to a square black box. I'm now wondering if I'm looking in the wrong place? I've also check under the passenger section but no box stands out to me, only place I haven't checked is the grill behind the wipers themselves. Would this been where it is?

Any help finding it would be greatful as its pass its mot by a number of mths :( and I know it won't pass on this problem.

Just to add it did it 2 yrs ago but the cold winter (ie the bad ice one) seemed to cure it, only since I took the dead battery off to recharge its come back, damm thing.

You won't find it there, it's inside the BSI :(

Are they the same problems you're having - no intermittent, parks wherever the hell it likes?

yep :(
I did find a black relay box on ebay but this must be the for the one before.

Would I have to get the BSi checked/reset by a garage or is it a prolonged problem

Sorry for the delay. It is possible to change the relay but it's not for the faint-hearted so you need to check everything else out first.

I'm not sure about the garage, I have a feeling they'll throw their hands up in horror, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask. Pug themselves would probably just change the BSI and see if it cleared the fault (who cares if the customer is paying, right?)

Would the other problems be the wiper motor? But anything else come to mind?

I've found a bsi on ebay thats the same make model etc, do the part numbers have to match up?
heres the link,

Motor, connectors, wiring. The motor itself switches an earth and that's how the BSI knows where they are to park them, so if the switch has had it (they used to wear out on older cars) or there's a bad earth then it won't be telling the BSI owt.

Seeing as how the problem returned when you changed the battery you could try a BSI reset (it always seems like an act of desperation to me but sometimes it works) - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=10968&p=97438&hilit=reset#p97438

Even if you manage to get a BSI with exactly the same codes it'll still need reprogramming with PP2000 for stuff like your radio to work. Perhaps you can find someone with this near you.

It could also be the switch...

I was thinking how I'd tackle this one and I suppose my first port of call would be the wiper motor:
Image
Note the contacts inside for sending an earth to the BSI. Pull the connector off & check for continuity between pins 1 & 2 on the motor at the parked position (if you can get it there...), also check for an earth on the wire going to pin 1. MC20 is a chassis earth that's meant to be located somewhere between the engine ecu and the headlamp on that side.

Now then,

I'm looking into this wiper motor again, passed its mot on it  but gettin it sorted would help

Took it to some peugeot specialist who went over ever relay to tell me its in the bsi, changed the wiper stalk but still didn't work, keeping the brought spare one tho as this I'm told is common fault and watchin the guy do it seems easier to do myself than I first thought and many bsi resets don't seem to do nowt.
On a update the relay does seem to click from the bsi area when moving so the motor might be the fault.
Currently learing how to get the damm wiper off to get the plastic off to even get to the motor grrr
