P0230 Code

Hi all,

Hi All.

I have a 199v 406 2.0hdi 110 and a few weeks ago the above mentioned code popped up and the car cut out.

After an exhaustive search it seemed to be a faulty in tank fuel pump, the pump would work lying flat for testing but when dropped back in the tank it wouldnt.

Today the car wouldnt start again and my PO230 Powertrain: Fuel pump relay control circuit code has come back

I have checked the pump and definately ruled that out. I done a BSI reset and the car started but then after i turned it off, nothing. She cranks over ok but just wont fire? I pressed the red button (fuel cut off) under the bonnet and she fired up again but as soon as i clear the code it returns??? I dont have PP, just a basic engine code reader. we have tested both solenoids (working), the inertia switch (working) and checked the camshaft sensor at the ecu, that's working too. All checked by testing the ohms with a volt meter and passed. Car still wont start though and now it is showing that it is in economy mode. I have even checked to see if cam belt has snapped but that appears to be ok on a visual inspection.

Has anybody else had a similar problem or any ideas what else throws the P0230 code up?

Hi there. Looks like you're not the first to get this code but there doesn't seem to be many actual fixes for it (all the threads just peter out, presumably when the owners had enough and pushed the car off a cliff

) There was this one - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18013&p=178190&hili ... A6#p178190 but that was with some other codes so I don't think this one's likely.

So, the pump worked on the bench but not on the car? So I'm presuming that you gave it 12 volts and it sprang to life but it's not getting anything from the car? Your car does still have a fuel pump relay that you can get to, it's the multi relay that's in the box with the engine ecu (on later cars it's part of the ecu) and I know these occasionally do give problems but I'm not sure what codes they produce.

it happens a lot to the tuned 306's and its normally the fuel presser regulator on the high presser pump on the bosch systems thay are replaceable or you can clean them

if you replace it it will set you back £200ish for the part that's just the regulator or you can get one from a breakers yard

Hi Steve.

The initial fault was with the pump yes,it only worked when it was lying vertical but as soon as it was stood upright it stopped working. I managed to source a pump for it and that is still working fine, it's something else causing the problem now

I checked the double relay on another car and that works fine. My brother has the same car so I might have to swap plates when he isn't looking as I dont want to give up on her!

Hi madman,

Any suggestions on how to clean the pressure regulator?? Seems a much better option than replacing it, especially if it turns out not to be that

I followed the link for probable causes which showed a few pics of a gunned up BSI.

I have just pulled the carpet out by the accelerator to check all the connections and checked the connections to the BSI and they were all clean and dry. Put it all back together and hey the car started

I left the car running for a bit to charge the battery up and after about 10 mins running she cut out!
Back to where I started now

These pumps are known to fail / run intermittently when the brushes are about worn out. Could you establish whether you have power to it all the time or not?
(Ideally by monitoring at the connector on top of the pump itself).

you soak it in whit spirit and move the tip in and out and check the o-rings on the regulator as sum times thay split you can get them from put for not to much the small ones have a min order of 4

Hi Doggy.

Not sure how to monitor it if the car won't start? I can hear it whirring all the time and if I disconnect a fuel line from fuel filter it pumps out.

I will try an give it a clean, is there a wy to tell if it's knackered when I take it out?

I think he means monitor the voltage because maybe it's intermittant

I once spent months tracking down a fault on an old Passat, it lead me a merry dance because it had two duff relays so it was eventually driving about with LEDs on it so I could see just what exactly was going on.

Just to clarify, when you say whirring all the time, it should run for a few seconds when you turn the "ignition" on but stop until the car is actually running. Is this what you meant?

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, it runs for a few seconds then stops, thinks that to prime the system but not too sure. I tested to see if fuel was getting delivered after it had stopped by disconnecting a pipe to the fuel filter and cranking the car. It worked everytime!! Brings a tear to a glass eye the amount of diesel I have lost testing it all the time

Hi all.

I took the fuel pressure regulator off this morning to give it a clean as suggested but it seemed pretty clean, only noticed a tiny bit of dirt on the tip.

Once I put car back together it started

Left it running for 15 mins to charge the battery then turned it off. Come to start the car again and no joy

Is it looking like a faulty pressure regulator???

I have just re-read the post on cleaning the regulator. I could only see one "o" ring and I forget to move the tip in and out

do you move it in and out by just applying pressure on it or can this damage the tip?

there may be a yellow plug low on the frount of the engine thay can get water in them so check that too

just pull and push it gently
