406HDI Remove A/C compressor & fit smaller belt?

Post by allypally »

Can i remove the A/C compressor and fit a smaller belt? Would i need new idler rollers or tensioner etc? My workshop manual does not show a diagram of layout without A/C.

So, it looks like the answer is yes you probabley could, but why bother, as opposed to just leaving it on there and not using it?

Thank Lozz and Busman. Looks like the center pulley is in different position and additional one at bottom. Looks like i would need two pulleys and a new belt and then still not sure if i could make them fit. Only thinking of it now as i could do with changing the belt anyway and i am worried about compressor seizing on me.
Thanks again.

Any better?

The idler in the same place looks a similar size but has a different part number.
03 5703A5 COLUMN SCREW (about 4 quid)
06 575196 ROLLER (about 30 quid)
07 575156 ROLLER (must be gold plated)
The tensioner is the same.

You should be able to pick the rollers up from a factor's a hell of a lot cheaper...

The belt depends on an RPO (something to do with the alternator):
5750XT DRIVE BELT K6 LE 1468 - UNTIL RPO 09337
5750WH LE 1468-K6 - SINCE RPO 09338
Err, isn't the 1468 the length :? Maybe the width is different. Or something.

Oh crap, I was just having another look and I've spotted that the alternator brackets are also different (where the rollers go). 5706E7 80 quid on Service Box :|

Thanks Steve_earwig, Just what i thought not as straight forward as one would expect. A few quid in parts as well. I may try a breakers for the complete assembly.
Do you know what chance there is of the A/C compressor seizing with no oil in it and just leaving it on car without using A/C as it stopped working 18mths ago?
Obviously pulley still running all the time but not the compressor running without the clutch engaged.

I've never heard of one seizing, I can't see why it would but that's not saying it's impossible, just I don't know.

I reckon breakers too, the bracket is a common part (I could do a list...)

The A/c compressors can lock up.
but ithink you will notice warning sighns before it doing so,

if its not noisy and theres no sighn of belt fray, iwouid leave it alone tbh.

I started checking but it looks like it's going to be any one of these with a DW10 but without air con.

The bottom pic looks suspiciously like the arrangement on my Expert van 2.0 HDi 2004 and the arrangement in your post, Steve.

I can have a look in the morning for the belt length if that's any help....I have a couple of spare ones lying about.

If it doesn't have air con it will be the same. I think that's the length there, 1468? But I don't know what the difference is if the lengths are the same, I'm just guessing width. Or it might be the ribs (to excite? )

I was actually wondering if it would be worth using the old larger roller, with the 2nd smaller one and then measuring it all & buying a belt of the appropriate length. Or would that be a PITA?

Yeah, 1468 sounds familiar, they are the same width ....K6 is their listing....6PK is the number of ribs, so K6 will be 6 ribs as with the 6PK (the listing i'm familiar with.)

Mine is without A/C.

I don't know about the bigger roller, but the lower one doesn't seem to do a whole lot.....might be possible to remove the bigger roller and use a shorter belt.
