Cabin fan problems

my s reg 2ltr estate petrol 406 has an intermittent cabin fan . All power lines ok. Told I need a fan speed control unit. What does it look like and where is it?

Have a look in the passenger footwell behind the glovebox.

Pull the clips securing the cover to the underside of the glovebox and you'll see the fan.

If memory serves there are 2 electrical connectors (check for signs of overheating) and 3 torx screws holding the fan assembly in place.
Chances are the resistor has failed which can be replaced or just scan your local breakers for a complete unit.

Removal is straight forward enough but I seem to remember using my flexi screwdriver to access the back torx bolt which made it even easier.

Many thanks. Got a new fan assemby via a mate (ask no questions ect) but not got any cabin heat. Have I missed something electrical? What controls the heater flaps? Haynes very vague on the subject. I recently had to replace the radiator and bled the system. Good equal temperature in both heater pipes to it isnt that. Checked outside temp unit - internal and external readings the same. Cleaned sensor unit in the roof. Are there any others?

If the fan is now working and the matrix isn't blocked I'd be looking at the control unit on the dash.

Depending on the spec it's either digital or manual but I believe they both require stereo and the 2 end buttons above the heater controls removed to access the screws.
If the fan speed adjuster works it might be dirty contacts on the other controls.

I cleaned the contacts on digital buttons - thank god for spray cleaners. I got heat!!!

By the way should the fan be on all of the time and is temp shown on the display is the cabin temp?

On another note what is the difference between the D's?

I drive a '98 executive turbo estate- is that a D7 or 8?

AFAIK, the only temperatures you'll ever find on a display are outside air temperature or set temperature for digital climate control - cabin temp. though measured, is never displayed.

Yours is a D8 - the 99-04 cars with the honeycomb grilles are D9's, (don't think they made a D9 petrol turbo).

No, they made a 2.2 petrol instead

The fan shouldn't be on *all* the time, you should be able to turn it all the way down.
