Indicators don't always tick!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Indicators don't always tick!

Post by RobTurbo »

I noticed a few weeks ago that my indicators don't always tick, the light on the dash still flashes as it should and I'm fairly sure the indicators are still flashing as they should (or a lot of people have a death wish!) Sometimes I start indicating and it doesn't tick at first but a short while later it will start ticking, other times it won't tick at all and other times it ticks right from the start.

I know that the ticking is usually the relay, so if it's not ticking it's not flashing, but is that not the case on an '03 406? I think it would be odd if the tick was added just so you can hear when your indicators are on! Is the indicator relay a separate relay or is it in the bsi?

Yep, it's in the BSI, the tick is made by a small speaker in the COM2000

So a lack of ticking isn't anything to be too concerned about! Seems odd to have the ticking added artificially!

But people expect to hear it. I don't even think it's a legal requirement.

RobTurbo,

I have had exactly the same fault on my 2004 HDi 90, it got worse & worse until they hardly ever 'ticked', although the indicator system functioned perfectly.

Wanging the indicator stalk about in all directions, making the headlights flash etc every day has apparently fixed it.

Lazy contacts in the switch base somewhere?

It's all working every day now. 8)

When I first got the car it had the floppy indicator problem, I fixed it by pulling the com2000 apart and stretching the spring, I think I stretched it a bit too much though because it's hard to flash the lights now, by the time you've applied enough force to move it, it goes straight past flash and turns the main beam on (if the lights are on of course!) so it may be time to strip it down again to both fix the headlight flash and check contacts on the indicators.
