engine swap on 2.1 td diesel pump swap

Post by 406lover »

After a bit of advice please. I have got to do a engine swap in my 1998 's' reg 2.1 td 406. after my timing belt slipped and done some valves. I have tracked down another engine, :D but have been told by one person that i need to change the diesel pump over but on the other hand been told i dont need to by someone else :?

can anyone shed some light on this please, as i dont want to change the timing belt on this engine and pump to find out that i got to take it all apart again to put my old pump in again.

Also any one have any advice on the engine swap please. will be starting it xmas eve/boxing day

thank you in advance for any help

Hi there :cheesy: What is this "new" engine, does it have a different pump on it, say a Bosch?

If it's the same pump as your original I can't see why it would need changing, unless there's any doubt re its serviceability :?

It's a very very long time since I had an engine out of a car and they got a lot more complicated since. I'm sure others will be able to give you a better idea

I'm pretty sure that's not the case, the immobilizer cuts off the supply to the ecu but doesn't go near the pump. Still, maybe someone else will have a better idea (Sunday evening and there's no-one about? :? )

The immobiliser on the Lucas EPIC system, when engaged, prevents the stop solenoid from opening, therefore the engine will not fire, although it will turn over. The stop solenoid is built into the EPIC pump and difficult to access.

Some 406s are fitted with a number pad for the immobiliser by the driver's knee, does yours have this? If yes, I advise removing the pad before doing anything else. If you don't have this keypad, then I believe the immobiliser is disabled only by the correct RFID tag being present in the key (Philips ID33) and that tag being coded to the injection ECM, which can be done via PP2000 (not that I've actually done this on my D8).

The problem you may encounter is therefore not to do with the pump, but with the ECM letting the stop solenoid disengage. Therefore I suggest you use the pump that comes with the replacement engine, but use your original ECU. You could try coding the new one, but I don't really see the point since it takes seconds to unplug.

get hold of the wiring diagram and fined the switched 12v then put that to the start stop solenoid, done no immobilisers
