heater fan not working

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

heater fan not working

Post by pugi406 »

hi guys
on my 406 1.8 2000 fan doesnt work..manual aircondition.
I connected the fan directly to the battery and work. at the connector which came in fan I don't have a feed on the red wire.
I cheked fuses (no.2-5V) and change it.
All switch for aircondition, rear window heat work normaly. Can be something wrong with control unit or what?

thanks

I've had this happen on two 406s and it's happened to a friend' car too.

It's where the connector fits into the ballast resistor (I believe). A new ballast resistor is not too expensive, but difficult to remove/replace.

I sorted all three by cleaning the 'burnt' teminals/connectors, nipping up the connectors for a tight fit. Still working fine after several years.

Where is the resistor?
is located on the housing of fan or near fan.
I only saw near fan one smole black box on the two screws and wires come in from fan conector.??

Do you have picture of that?

Thanks guys and sorry for my english :)

I didn't think the heater fan had any ballast resistors and worked by a couple of transistors on the fan housing (the engine fan does have ballast resistors on earlier cars though :? )

The box is probably the control unit, is it on the bottom of the heater housing?

Don't worry about your English, it's fine :cheesy:

The models I am refering to are all D9 2001 onwards.

Could be the control unit, but I was told it is a ballast resistor and did not question this.

Whatever, it's a box with four connections that a multi-plug from the fan unit fits, and is situated (on RHD cars) to left hand side of the main (centre mounted) heater unit right at the base and next to the bulkhead.

Sounds like crusty power spade connectors to me, very common, and found directly at the fan housing.

Have you checked if theres power at the Green conector?

if no power there, it might be the ign-barrel,

As far as I know that's the blower control module:

While it would be amusing (annoying?) to think that there's only a few ballast resistors in there, the fan is quite powerful so they'd get extremely hot

8) glad you got sorted.

the ign barrel is a common fail, theres little points/contacts inside that wear out,
