Airbags, Pre-tensioner Replacement....

Just out out of interest many of the phase 1 406's will be coming up to, and some will have passed the 10 year old mark by now.

Has anyone actually had there full airbag systems and seatbelt pre-tensioners replaced as per the manual / manufacturers guidance?

My car is only 6 years old so it will be another 4 yars before I start to consider it, but was interested in how many people actually do it, and wether it is worth it or not.

I used to own a Rover (Yuck!) previous to my 406, and at the 10 year point and as per manual and manufacturers instructions, I conacted my local dealer and enquired about the seatbelt pretensioners and airbag replacments.

They told me that they had never replaced any, and advised me that it was only in the manual to satisfy regulations and cover their arses. Is the same true with the 406?

(Ps If you have had your stystems replaced, how much was it? as I bet it weren't cheap.)

Now if I was cynical, I'd say that it's only in the manual in an attempt to try to make the owner think the car will be unsafe if they don't get it done, so they ring the dealer and find out that the cost for replacement would be considerably more than the car is worth, so they bin the car and buy a newer Peugeot.....

A lame arsed attempt to secure future sales???

It has been proven in tests that the effectiveness of the airbag reduces over time, which is why they have a shelf life. It is quite probable that the airbag will still be fine in 20 years time and nothing would perish, but as already mentioned, it is advised to renew after 10 years to cover their backs.

The pretensioners are the same, as they are also filled with compressed gas. so the pressure and likelyness to fire when needed reduces with time.
Again to cover their back.

If you take off your pretesioners or airbag their should be a manufacture and replacement date.


way to look at it is that you hopefully will never have to use the safety features. The crumple zone on the 406 is supposed to be pretty generous, and older cars never used to have pretensioners and airbags, and people survived accidents fine.

I just go along the line of I didn't have an air bag until 7 years ago. I had a head on accident with a van 12 years ago in a Nova and was OK.

My moral, a half arsed airbag will be better than nothing.

we recieved a buletin from Volvo HQ in sweden about 6 months ago telling us this is no longer relievant, and to remove the airbag renewal stickers whenever a car with SRS comes to us
