central locking

My central locking has suddenly developed a fault, when I press the lock button on the key the locking makes a noise and then there is a beep and the car is not locked, it locks OK using the key in the door.
2003 406 2 button key

Any ideas

Where does the beep come from? Does it lock ok from both doors?

beep appears to come from under the bonnet have only tried the drivers door with the key, tonight locked OK with the button??

Strangeness. If it happens again try locking it from the passenger side (my thinking being the driver's side solenoid is the one playing up).

Beep from under the bonnet might be a solenoid chattering I guess, but I think the c/l relays are in the BSI

My money is on an alarm fault, have a look under the glove box for a small black box with a blue plug on one end and a brown plug on the other, unplug the blue plug and try locking the doors with the remote.

Gah! An alarm, that must be the beep - I didn't think of that 'cos neither of mine has/had one.
