WANTED ; HDI 5 dial clocks.

Post by Tubthumper »

Afternoon all,

I currently have an X reg (2000) HDI 90 rapier estate, that has an intermittant speedo and temp guage fault. I've changed the speed sensor on the gearbox, and the temp sensor, re-soldered the clocks, but the fault remains. I've also checked and used contact cleaner on any connections I could find, so my next step is to replace the clocks, to see if they are the issue ?

The ones I'm after are 5 dial, with two plugs (black and white ) on the back. The mileage also needs to be below 103, 000 .

Thanks in advance.

Malc.

I've found a suitable set, but the mileage is 115, 000. Am I right in thinking that my ECU will reset itself to that mileage, instead of the cars actual 103,000 ?

Yes that is what happended to my old Rapier it had 113 on the clock and the ones i fitted had 125 so i added 12k to the mileage. Are you sure of the mileage on the new clocks because you can't tell unless you plug them in and then it's too late to find they might have come from a starship mileage taxi !

I can only go by what mileage the seller has told me is on the clocks, but I'm still loathed to add 11,000 miles to it, especially if it turns out that it's not the clocks that are at fault !

When i added the miles i thought i would just put my old lower mileage clocks back in as i thought it was the clocks that kept the memory but the car does so even my old clocks had the added mileage! I jooted it down in the service history and when i sold the car told the new owner and verified it with the previous MOT,still a pain in the backside though.

Just out of curiosity, what fault did yours have that required the clocks to be changed, and did it sort it ?

Mine in the end wasn't a fault,it was me being thick.Every car i've owned have had an oil light along with the battery light when you turn the ignition on but the HDI did'nt so i thought there was a problem,i changed the oil pressure switch on the engine and still no light so i changed the clocks and still no light then i found out via the forum that my car's oil light would only come on if there is a fault along with the "stop" light, even the main pug dealer said there should be an oil light but that turned out to be on the earlier models, doh!

If you have a BSI the mileage is stored there as well, all parts that hold the mileage take the highest value, so if the car has 100k and you fit clocks with 150k, the BSI will be set to 150k, so everything matches.

The easiest way to sort this is buy clocks with lower mileage than your car or reset the clocks to 0 miles, then when they are plugged in they take the mileage from the BSI, keeping them reading right.

I can reset the mileage on most clocks, I don't have the programmer for clocks with a NEC chip though (yet, I may be getting one soon, it might be what I need to sort my alarm coding problems)

Thanks for the replies.

Rob, I didn't realise the clocks could be reset, so if this is a fairly straight forward procedure, buying the clocks I've been offered might be the way forward ?

You have to strip the clocks down to the circuit board, remove a chip, reprogram it with zero miles, then solder it back on and put the clocks back together.

I'm not sure what chip it will be in your clocks, if you let me know the make of them I'll look it up and let you know if I can do it.

Annoyingly, I had the clocks out, and stripped down to the board a while ago, as I tried re-soldering the joints, but didn't take a note of the part number etc  I think I'll hold out for the correct cluster, with roughly the same, or lower mileage.

If you're handy with a soldering iron and you're getting the same clocks as a replacement just buy some really high mileage clocks for peanuts and swap the chip over with the one from yours.

Thanks Rob, that could well be the solution. I don't suppose you've got a pic/diagram of what chip I'd be removing ?

I believe it's a Futurlec 93C66 EEPROM IC. Available in SOIC or TSSOP (and DIP - haha) - not sure which the 406 uses. Someone else will confirm I'm sure :)

It'll be SOIC (surface mount, 8 pins), it's towards the middle, top of the circuit board and may well be a 93c66, I don't have the software on this laptop to check.
