200 mile round trip tomorrow to inventory some kit in an unheated building, arrange to clear it, then I'm off for the rest of the week.

To add to the fun, my BSI's gone bonkers, central locking's packed in, got a serious vibration I'm hoping is a wonky tyre and a distinct whiff of leaking diesel........

What could possibly go wrong?

Probably battery failing rather than BSI, the autolights turn themselves on, the r/c's lost sync, (but at least the keys work in both door locks), radio re-tunes to channel 1, even the service indicator has reset itself at some point in the last week......

at least it starts first time, every time, even if it doesn't crank that fast.

Well, I made it to the W Midlands and back without incident - 210 miles of sticking below 50 most of the time.
Rumble's getting worse. :(
When I noticed the MFD being all fuzzy with various lines missing, I think the only thing thatb saved it was not having a lighter since I don't smoke anymore.
But it got me home this evening and the display's recovered.

So, now it's time to play guess the source of the vibration.

Clues so far:

Sounds like it's coming from the nsf wheel / hub area
You can (just) feel it through the steering
On a good road surface, (remember them?) it' s detectable at 35 or so & gets worse as speed increases
Seems slightly more noticeable on the overrun
Steering angle affects it - almost disappears on slight left-hand lock
No clicking noises on full lock

It's a bugger to try to trace in this weather. At the moment my game plan is to swap all the wheels for the spare in rotation, checking for play, noises or other clues as I go.....

Suggestions welcome

Tomorrow is set to be foggy, starting at -6, but rising to a balmy 0 degress in the mid afternoon.

Joy!

I'd put money on it being a goosed wheel bearing!

I had one fail on the Focus. No droaning, I was just driving down the motorway one day and heard a loud twang (like a guitar string snapping) and it was rumbling and vibrating like mad

Either that or a 'stepped' tyre.

Yea, wheel bearing, the noise can increase/decrease as you turn due to the weight coming off/going on.

Thanks guys. I've had noisy fwd wheel bearings before, this sounds similar and the change in noise with steering movement is a little bit like that, but different. On previous cars it got noisier turning one way and quieter the other - this one is uniformly noisy at all steering positions except very slight lock one way. The other difference is it has developed much quicker, I could barely notice anything a week ago, now I'm frightened to drive it.

You could well be right though, so I will check. From previous experience, they had to get really bad before you could detect anything by spinning the bearing or feeling for play at the wheel rim.

Oh, strangeness. I once found the bolts loose on one wheel...

Not beyond the realms of possibility - I've yet to have a wheel off this one, hence my plan to swap the spare onto all 4 corners in turn........

On a positive note, I've just reprogrammed both keys successfully 8)

so just the vibration and the smell of diesel, (hoping that's a perished leak-off pipe or something equally simple)

Sorry, I should have described this better.
Noticed a very faint whiff if diesel one night last week while driving, but not since, so concluded it came from something I was following. Until Sunday, when I was trying to change from me dog walking wellies, round the front of the car as that was kinda out of the blizzard and noticed a fairly strong stench.....
It's more noticeable outside the car, doesn't appear to have affected the mpg, no puddles I can find, but then I do have a full undertray, at least so far.
Oh, no fault codes either.
