Battery problem

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Battery problem

Post by Karl »

Hi all

I had a problem with the battery which was flat and could not turn the engine. I changed the battery and the battery connectors. Everything seemed fine until
yesterday when the new battery was not able to turn the engine. Battery voltage is 12.7 V. I was able to jumb start the engine. I checked the current consumed when the key is inserted and in drive position (engine stopped and no light on) . It was 10 Amp. It seems high to me. Has anyone ever measured this.

Sorry, I'm not really sure what you are saying there, drive position of the gearbox? This is the ignition key inserted but not turned so no lights are on the dash board or turned to the position it would be in if you were driving the car?

I suspect the latter, 10 amps is rather a lot (I'm not really sure if the fuel pump takes this much current or even if it runs when the engine is not running) so perhaps you could remove fuses one at a time until the current drops significantly, then you will have a better idea where to look.

I think there is a problem with the starter motor. I have to take it out and maybe replace it. Is there anything I should pay attention to during dismantling.

I have taken out the starter motor, has a suspect burnt smell. Will get a another one next week.
The 10 amp is from the fuel pump.
