Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
Hi guys
After a nightmare trying to get parts for the car.....long story and a lost in the post pump and regulator. I managed to get another pressure regulator today (2nd hand from a local breaker).
I thought that would put an end to my car problems but she still won't start!!!
I have noticed that before, the fuel filter housing lid was expanding when you turn the ignition on,but now it's not moving at all. Could this indicate another problem or is it time to send the car to the knackers yard???

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
it's just the lift pump or the 12v feed to the lift pump so check it all even if you have checked it already
Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
I have checked that and you can hear the pump n the tank whirring when you turn the ignition on.
I have even got a spare one of them now. I have to go to work in 5 mins so I will get a multimeter on the connector at the tank tomorrow. Any other ideas mate?

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
Hi guys,
Had a bit of time to tinker today so I have checked both low pressure pumps to see if they are pumping and they appear to be working ok. I am getting flow and return to the tank, and fuel is getting to the injectors and coming out of the high pressure pump yet the fuel filter head is not expanding an the car still wont start. Is it looking more like the high pressure pump that is knackered or is it time to throw in the towel?

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
what condition are the immobilisers relays in as this may be causing the fault thay are next to the battery box on the 02 and are in a little black box
Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
Have you not got rac cover etc ?
might be worth a shot if so

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
Not checked the immobiliser relays to be honest. I thought an immobiliser issue would throw up the key symbol on the dashboard? Worth a try though.
I have start rescue cover, but I am guessing they would just tow me home or to a garage?

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
After finally getting planet and doing some tests on car I am wondering if anyone can help me further?
I now have 3 pressure regulators and 3 filter bowl and housing so the odds of all three being knackered are remote....I hope???
I have done actuator tests on all three of the pressure regulators when fitted in the car and the results are all the same. I have been told they have no moving parts and I am comparing the tests with one I done on a working 406hdi (lucky sod).
The working one seems to, what I can only describe as it sounds like it squirts fuel at high pressure at the same time the fuel filter head bulges....mine sounds just like a light hiss and no bulge at all?
This was done on ignition only so surely I can't be relying on hp pump to generate the pressure needed to squirt the regulator and expand the filter head as that would only be effective on cranking or running?
If anyone knows the procedure in which it gets to build the pressure up on ignition then maybe I could put this nightmare to bed?
Sorry if I have posted in the wrong section again

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
Thinking about it, you might be able to see the fuel rail pressure and engine RPM while it's cranking........
I have never tried this personally, but as I intend to change my fuel filter later this morning, I'll give it a try. Trouble is, you only have a few seconds before it fires, unless I knobble it somehow. Guess I could unplug the injectors, any other ideas, people?

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
Thanks again for your input Doggy.
Would the fuel rail pressure sensor have anything to do with it? I did put a 2nd hand one one but I could always try another as I think there is one in a scrapyard by me....might as well I suppose,I got spare everything else
If you can guide me in the right direction on planet then I could always post results up? I am guessing it would be in parameters somewhere?

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
Well, I trid to get some readings before it started, (chickened out over unplugging anything, I'm afraid).
Caught a couple of fleeting readings - engine RPM read 220 ish just before it fired, fuel pressure 185 Bar, but that was about all I could see.
One other thought - if you look in Parameters / Control Unit Condition, do you get something similar to this?

In other words is your ecu letting it start?

Re: 406 HDI FUEL FILTER HOUSING
Will have a look at that in the morning, although I am pretty sure I seen somewhere that the ecu is unlocked?
I have even trying to determine if the lp pump is up to scratch and maybe that is what is causing the lack of bulge to the fuel filter head so I looked the return fuel line. I never got no bulge in the filter head but I got some serious squirting when I disconnected it. Guess that rules out the lp pump then

I couldnt find that screen Doggy, the closest i could get was this?
Sorry about the quality, i dont kknow how you copy the image to your computer??
A local scrappie has a hp pump in for £60 but he says the numbers dont match but that doesnt matter, mine ends in 010 010.
Just tryin to keep options open in case it is the hp pump???

I agree, it's certainly unlocked.womble171 wrote:I couldnt find that screen Doggy, the closest i could get was this?
Press shift+prnt screen, then open Paint, click Edit, then Paste. Save it as a jpegSorry about the quality, i dont kknow how you copy the image to your computer??
Could be the hp pump, I guess we're all trying to avoid the timing belt job that goes with it - maybe you could hang fire on replacing the belt etc until it's actually running....A local scrappie has a hp pump in for £60 but he says the numbers dont match but that doesnt matter, mine ends in 010 010.
