Peugeot 406 1.9 tdi 66kw glow plug problems
Hello,
I've had this 406 tdi for about 2 years now. I live in colder climate(Estonia) and have problem with the glow plugs. It seems that for some reason they go out after changing them. I have now changed the plugs 3 times in 2 years time(its a really messy job to change them if you know). Last time I changed them in beginning of december and they went out about 1 week later. It shows soon after the plugs goes out, i need to keep charging the starter and then the car starts but smoke comes out from the exchaust, all cylinders doesn't start to work and engine works unevenenly for about minute or so.
All the garages and also Peugeot dealer doesn't know where to look for the fault and are basically saying to throw away the car. Maybe somebody has the same experience with this car and knows where to find the fault why the plugs keeps going out?

Hello and welcome to the forum,
sorry your post is slightly confusing.
from what ican see what you are saying is, youve fitted a few sets of glow plugs and theyre failing?"
if so, iwouid check the Wiring to them or the Main glow plug relay,
What year is your 406 is it a D8 Xud or D9 hdi ?

Hi,
I have changed the plugs 3 times in 2 years time. Well I guess first time they didnt change all 4 plugs but last time I was standing next to the mechanic the whole time and all 4 plugs were changed. After changing the plugs it wasnt really ok, the car did start up nicely but engine died out couple of times before it stayed on running. About a week later it felt again that atleast 1 plug had went out since the car didnt start up cold and I needed to keep the starter motor running before the car was able to start.. Its kind of hard to explain but I have had a bit struggle with the car for past 2 winters, in summer its super nice car and very reliable.
As far as i have heard the glow plugs dont go out as soon as the glow plug light from dashboard goes out but the plugs go out at some point when engine is warm enough?
I think last year when I took the car to Peugeot dealer to make diagnostics they found that cam sensor? was broken also besides the plugs. I didnt change this sensor since I forgot about it and it didnt seem to matter, can this be also related actuall?
Its from 1999 but I dont really know which exact model the engine is..

If its a 1999 it might be in Hdi Territory,
Hdi isnt reliant on Glow plugs like the X'ud engines,
Not sure what youve got here, idealy it wouid be good to know what engine you have - so people can advise further,

but the plugs themselves actually go out also. I changed all 4 plugs in july 2012 and then again in december 2012. In december 2012 2 plugs out of 4 were out then we took them out and tested them. Then in 1 week after changing them in decemeber 1 or more candles are burnt out again.. So im not sure about the wire since they actually did work for about week or so after changing them last time.

I have the same car and changed just one plug each time one failed. Despite advice that you need to change them all. Apart from the two I cahnged the remainder still work fine. Have you actually tested the ones you remove to see if they have all failed ? IF they haveI would suggest this is because you have a faulty relay or timer that is leaving them on too long and so burning them out.

Hi & welcome to the forum.
As others have said, always change all 4 glow plugs. Only use Bosch or NGK, nothing else will last.
