My fan belt snapped last week taking the timing belt with it . The mechanic said it would be better off just replacing the engine so iv been on the hunt. The car is a 2001 406 2.0 HDI (90) Bosch pump. A member of another local forum mentioned he has one but for a 306. Is there any differene between these models or engines? Sorry for what may be a silly question, i wouldn't be that mechanically minded...
The engine itself is the same, some bits might need swapping over from yours, like the exhaust manifold, intake pipe and I think the radiator hoses are in a different place, but the bits are easy to swap over.

Thanks very much for this. Its at a very resonable price so il look into it with my mechanic in the morning.
The trouble is at 90k has it had a cambelt change? If it can't be proven that'll have to be done before the engine's been changed and with the labour cost to install it and fluids etc i would have thought it would have been much cheaper to replace the broken rockers, cam and aux belt on the existing engine.

Very good point. Il keep this in mind, still deciding on the best route to take thatll also cost the least. Il talk this over more with the mechanic however it was him that said it would be cheaper to source an engine. I am unaware of the damage inside the engine, just going by what he has said it wasnt good...
The timing belt etc. would also need replacing on the old engine anyway. Pug prices for the rockers are about 20 quid each, ebay prices less at around 14 (plus the almighty p&p), which still makes the new engine a good deal. What I was thinking about was the labour time replacing the followers vs. changing a complete engine. I guess at the end of the day it's what you feel comfortable with, it's unlikely that the engine will be toast but not impossible.
