2002 406HDi Driver Electric Window Problem

Hello Experts,

I'm wondering have any of you heard of this problem before.
When I press the button to lower the drivers window it won't come back up when I press the button to bring it back. At first I thought it was it was problem with the switch but I now suspect its a logic problem for the following reasons.

1. I lower the window half way
2. When I press the 'up' button the window goes down instead of going back up, if I keep pressing 'up' the windows goes fully down.
3. Pressing 'up' does nothing for several presses.
4. The 'up' button has to be repeatedly pressed and finally the window will go up.

All other 3 electric windows don't have this problem.
This problem is getting worse at first it only happened a few times but now its happening all the time. You can image how annoying this is after going through a toll booth on a wet day and the window gets stuck!

Is there a way to reset the logic.

I vaguely remember someone having a similar issue on here in the distant past, and the culprit being a worn switch. I'd start by changing the switch, probably easier to get the whole switch panel from a scrapper.

There's quite an easy fix for this. It happen to me recently and while looking for a new switch on ebay, I saw a guy was offering the instructions to repair the switch but only on D9's.

Anyway, I thought that I try to dismantle it and see what the fault was.

If you remove the switch from the door card and the 3 electical connectors, you can then work on the switch indoors.

Prise the bottom off the switch, remove the printed circuit board and then remove the blue plastic gizmo with the 4 contacts under the drivers window switch. Then thoroughly clean the PCB with an organic solvent e,g nail varnish remover, white spirits etc. Then reassemble in reverse order.

Eventually the door switched failed completely and I had to call the AA out to shut the window

Thanks for the replies.
After spending 3 hours (just to get the window closed!) I have taken apart the switch and cleaned the contacts on the PCB under the rubber membrane.
I reassemble tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

mines doing the same,i have already stripped and cleaned twice before,but will have to do it again soon,its is realy pissing me off now.

Hi All,

Sorry for the late update. The cleaning didn't work.
I figured out the problem is with the auto window. When you press the switch and let go the window either fully closes or shuts. In my case it won't shut at all unless you press the button 30 times or so.

I bypassed the auto section of the switch membrane and the window will close. Auto open and auto close doesn't work now but I can live without that. I don't mind keeping my finger on the button until it closes or opens fully. Better than getting wet!

I'll try to explain as best I can how I did this.

There are 4 switches needed to operate the drivers window.

Switch1: Up
Switch2: Down
Switch1A: Auto Up
Switch2A: Auto Down

This is where the cotton bud is in dummysocks picture.

When you press the main external switch up or down you activate either Switch1 and Switch1A simultaneously, or Switch2 and Switch2A simultaneously on the PCB.
A rubber membrane switch works by completing the circuit underneath it when it is pressed down. The membrane is conductive. Open up any cheap calculator and you will see the same system. I removed the rubber membrane from Switch1A and Switch1B so these switches were no longer active, hence bypassing the auto open and close feature.

Hope I have explained it well and it helps someone else out at sometime.
