D8 V6 electrical fault - not starting

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

D8 V6 electrical fault - not starting

Post by pauls »

Hi folks, I have been lurking on here for a while, and the site has helped with a few bits, but now I need some more help if anyone can oblige.

I've got a D8 V6 (ES9J4), and yesterday morning it wouldn't stay running. It started, ran for 5 seconds, stopped. Then started for a second and stopped, then wouldn't start at all. I'd last used it the day before for a ~200 mile trip without problem. The main EML light on the dash is not illluminating when it won't start, and I have the red and green lights on the immobiliser keypad. I disconnected the battery last night for about 30 minutes, went and tried it and everything was normal, it started for 5 seconds, then stopped again with all the same symptoms, no eml light etc. I then tried the inertia reset switch, and also checked the connectors under the battery tray (which had caused a fault previously), but all of that to no avail. Then checked the main ECU connector, again with no joy.

Next stop tonight will be to check the main connectors in the driver's footwell under the carpet, just in case.

Battery is in good condition, and I've been trickle charging it between starting attempts (off the car).

Has anyone got any other thoughts please?? I haven't got access to PP2000 sadly :|

Thanks in advance!

I don't think a D8 will have any connectors in the footwell to go bad :( On a car that age I'd head for the double relay (in the box with the ecu).

Thanks gents, double relay was next in line to get checked, and also start continuity checks on wires from the immobiliser too.. Sadly didn't get chance last night to do any more as it was dark and wet, now I've got it back on my driveway I shall have another poke at it.

I shall let you know what I find (if anything!)

Sad to report still cannot find the fault. Relay seems to be energising fine on the ignition so my guess would be a broken wire/bad connection somewhere. Sadly I haven't the time to sort it so have had to buy a new car to get mobile again so will pop this up for sale as spares / repairs, shame, it's been a good car. :frown: :(

Thanks for your help guys!
