What was wrong with just a simple saloon and an estate? I despise medium-sized hatchbacks (Focus, Golf etc.) even though they've been around for a while and those good-for-nothing X1s and Q3s that the German companies seem to be pumping out. They clearly found an idiots' market.
The only two body styles that are really needed are hatchbacks and estates, everything else is silly and impractical. I say "body styles", because in some cases, you need to increase ground clearance and add 4x4, for areas with bad or missing roads. A Golf or Focus is both ridiculously practical, good on fuel, fun to drive and easier to park than a saloon of similar utility (ie. a larger car).
The only reason I bought a saloon instead of an estate 406 is because saloons are 20-30% cheaper for a car in the same mechanical and general condition. Hatches and estates are much more practical, with a saloon you lose a lot of practicality, such as bringing home furniture from Ikea and the like.

I want to buy a Peugeot knowing it's 100% Peugeot, none of my Peugeots have been the direct result of a design share with Citroen or Fiat but I am a little tired of hearing or seeing the same car just re-badged differently........
Can't they just make their own cars and be 100% genuine, instead of sharing bits and bobs and models......
The 406 shares its platform with the Xantia. Same with the 407/C5 and 508/C5, the main difference being styling and suspension technology. Engines, gearboxes, electronics, switches etc. are all shared.
If Peugeot were to do a 100% Peugeot car with nothing coming from other places, it would be prohibitively expensive.
It's not quite as bad as with the Eurovan (807/C8/Ulysse) or the work vans (Boxer/Jumper/Ducato), but there's still a lot of sharing going on.
